Homers Lead Loons Past Hot Rods

April 21, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Midland, MI - To start up a four-game set at Dow Diamond and the second stop of a week-long roadtrip, the Bowling Green Hot Rods fell to the Great Lakes Loons by a score of 7-5 on Thursday night.

Facing a team with just three combined homers in the first eleven games of the season, the Hot Rods pitchers gave up three roundtrippers in the first four innings of the game on Thursday.

To start things off, designated hitter Brandon Davis hit a solo blast in the bottom of the second against Hot Rods starter Roel Ramirez (L, 1-1) to make the score 1-0. Two innings later, a two-run, two-out single by shortstop Omar Estevez had the Hot Rods down by three.

After run-scoring groundout from designated hitter David Rodriguez and solo homer by catcher Brett Sullivan cut the Hot Rods deficit to one, the Loons hit back-to-back homers against Ramirez and reliever Armando Bastardo courtesy of catcher Garrett Kennedy and outfielder Jordan Paroubeck to take a 5-2 lead.

On two separate occasions, Bowling Green was able to cut their deficit back to one. In the sixth inning, a two-run double by Sullivan cut the Loons lead to 5-4. Then, after a run-scoring grounder from Great Lakes second basemen Cristian Gomez put the Loons back up by two, a RBI single by Rodriguez in the eighth inning made the score 6-5.

Unfortunately, that is as close as the Hot Rods would get. Another run-scoring grounder by Gomez in the bottom of the eighth gave the Loons the insurance run they needed and closer Marcus Crescentini sent down the Hot Rods scoreless in the ninth to finish the game.

Aside from Sullivan and Rodriguez offensively, the Hot Rods got two more hits from shortstop Jacob Cronenworth. The Michigan-native has reached base in all 13 games played this year and has two or more hits in eleven of those games.

With the loss, the Hot Rods fell to just 2-7 away from Bowling Green Ballpark this year.

The Hot Rods will continue with the second leg of their roadtrip on Friday with the second game of a four-game series with the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond Ballpark. Bowling Green will send LHP Genesis Cabrera to the bump while the Loons will counter with RHP Dennis Santana. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. All seven games of the Hot Rods current roadtrip will be in the eastern time zone.

You can also listen in to Play-by-Play Broadcaster Alex Cohen for all the games on www.bghotrods.com via the MLB TuneIn Radio Application or on 1340 The Ticket in Southcentral Kentucky.
