Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - After several games in a row where it seemed as if nothing would go the SwampDogs' way, the Baseball gods made it up, and the "ËDogs cruised to a 7-4 victory over the Florence RedWolves Saturday night at The Swamp.
Things got off to a quick start, as leadoff batter Jason Blum was hit by a pitch to start the game, Kam Stewart laced a single to left, and David Palenzuela walked to load the bases with nobody out. Norm Donkin then stepped up and chopped a ball over the head of pitcher Wales Toney, which was fielded by second baseman Dean Wilson who threw to first to retire Donkin, but Blum would come in to score. Lane Paul would then draw a walk to load the bases once again, and two batters later Chase Edwards would take a walk to bring home Stewart.
The 2-0 score did not stay that way for long, as Cam Knott would surrender an unearned run in the second, and an earned run in the third, as the RedWolves tied the game at 2.
The SwampDogs struck again in the bottom of the third, as back to back singles by Donkin and Paul put runners on the corners with no outs. Sam Hall would ground out to third baseman Garrett Chapman and Donkin would come into score and the SwampDogs would retake the lead, and they would never relinquish it.
The SwampDogs would plate another run in the fifth and then two more in the seventh inning to establish a 7-2 lead.
Meanwhile Knott settled down and would go on to spin a quality outing going seven innings allowing seven hits, two runs, striking out six and walking just one while earning his second win of the season.
In the ninth inning, Deshorn Lake came on and surrendered a two runs on two hits, but was able to limit the damage to that, and the SwampDogs sent the fans home happy on fireworks night.
With the win, Knott's record is now 2-1 on the season, while Toney was tagged with the loss and fell to 0-1.
The SwampDogs are home again on Sunday for a special 5:05 pm start against the Peninsula Pilots on Father's Day. For tickets and more information, call our offices at 910-246-5900.
