The Indoor Football League announced the Week 17 Players of the Week on Tuesday, August 10. Frisco Fighters quarterback Malik Henry earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, Arizona Rattlers defensive back Dillion Winfrey claimed Defensive Player of the Week, and Iowa Barnstormers kicker Gabriel Rui was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
MALIK HENRY - OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Frisco Fighters quarterback Malik Henry earned his first Player of the Week honors in his second start of his career. Henry completed 16-of-27 passes for a career-high 194 yards and three touchdowns. Henry delivered a touchdown strike on the Fighters' first offensive play of the game via a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Manny Arceneaux. Later in the opening quarter, Henry showed off his arm strength again with a 42-yard pass to wideout Marques Rodgers to put the Fighters up 20-7. Henry and the Fighters would go on to notch their ninth win of the season, defeating the Spokane Shock for the second time, 45-34.
DILLION WINFREY - DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arizona Rattlers defensive back Dillion Winfrey was named Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season, and became the sixth Rattler to earn a Player of the Week nod. Winfrey put up a dominant performance from the defensive backfield, finishing with three interceptions along with a touchdown, four tackles, and two pass breakups. Winfrey owned the fourth quarter, picking off two passes in four Tucson possessions. He punctuated his night with a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown to push the Rattlers' lead to 55-28, which would be the game's final margin.
GABRIEL RUI - SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For his first time this year, Iowa Barnstormers kicker Gabriel Rui received Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against the Bismarck Bucks in Week 16. Rui scored 12 points for the Barnstormers, hitting 2-of-3 field goals and was perfect on extra points, going 6-for-6. Rui helped to seal the crucial win for Iowa, drilling a 47-yard field goal with 1:30 left in the game to extend Iowa's lead to 41-33. The Barnstormers needed that Rui field goal in the end, as they would hold on for the victory, 48-41.
Henry and the Fighters next host the Green Bay Blizzard in Week 17's IFL Game of the Week, while Rui and the Barnstormers welcome the Sioux Falls Storm in their next matchup. Winfrey and the Rattlers will travel up the west coast to face the Spokane Shock. All of these game will have major implications for the 2021 IFL Playoffs.
