Week 16 IFL Recap

June 8, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

Richmond, VA: Week 16 for the Indoor Football League was full of strong competitions as some of the League's teams stake claims on playoff hopes and others' hopes faltered.

The Indoor Football League began Week 16 with the La Crosse Spartans at the Bloomington Extreme on Friday evening. The first quarter was very uneventful for both teams; the Extreme was able to score a single touchdown within 4 minutes of the game, but both teams were silent after that. Going into the second quarter, the Extreme was able to find the momentum they lacked in the first quarter, scoring the next 2 touchdowns before the Spartans were able to get on the board with a touchdown of their own. Though the Spartans were able to stop the original Extreme scoring streak, the Extreme came back to score two more touchdowns before halftime. Starting the second half, the Spartans took control of the game. The Spartans defense was able to prevent the Extreme from scoring a single point in the third quarter, while their offense was able to post up 9 points. The momentum of the second half remained with the Spartans in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Extreme 14-10. The second half efforts of the La Crosse Spartans were not enough to overcome the dominance of the Bloomington Extreme in the first half, 45-29.

The second game for Friday evening was between the Seattle Timberwolves and Fairbanks Grizzlies, both members of the Pacific Division of the Intense Conference. Both teams started out strongly scoring in the double digits in the first and second quarters. At the end of the first half, the Grizzlies were ahead, 46-32. The Timberwolves and Grizzlies were closely matched throughout the game; however, the Timberwolves had minor mistakes, which turned into great yardage, positioning, and points for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies defense was able to disrupt the Timberwolves offense with 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 interceptions, which hindered the Timberwolves from overcoming the small gap in points. In the third and fourth quarters the Timberwolves were outscored 39-22. The Fairbanks Grizzlies were able to defeat division rival, the Seattle Timberwolves on Friday evening, 85-54.

The Wyoming Cavalry hosted the Omaha Beef on Friday evening looking to maintain the recent winning pattern set. The Cavalry of the Intense Conference and the Beef of the United Conference are both currently second in their divisions, which turned out to make the two teams a strong match. The greatest point difference throughout the entire game was in the third quarter, where the Cavalry scored 10 points while holding the Beef scoreless. The Beef was able to gain 194 yards in total offense while the Cavalry just had 227. Both had 2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries and no sacks. In every quarter except the fourth, the Cavalry was able to outscore the Beef. The Omaha Beef put forth a strong effort in the fourth quarter; however, the 15 point lead created in the previous three quarters was too great for the Beef to conquer. The Wyoming Cavalry came out victorious over the Omaha Beef, 41-33.

The next game of Week 16 was between the top team from the Lonestar Division, Allen Wranglers and the top team from the Mountain West Division, Colorado Ice. In the second quarter, the Ice outscored the Wranglers, 9-7; however, the Wranglers still had a 27-22 lead. Coming out of halftime, the Wranglers only had a 5 point lead, which the Ice was able to put a dent in during the third quarter, knocking it down to a 2-point difference. The fourth quarter was completely different from the previous three quarters of the game. The Wranglers quickly took control of the game scoring the first touchdown of the quarter, and not allowing the Ice to score more than a field goal for the first 8 minutes of the quarter. The Ice was not able to overcome the 1 interception, 2 sacks, and 2 lost fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown. By the close of the final quarter, the Allen Wranglers outscored the Colorado Ice 26-9, winning the game, 56-37.

Saturday evening the Tri Cities Fever stopped by the Wenatchee Valley Venom. In the first half of the game, the Fever dominated the game, outscoring the Venom10-0; however, the Venom came back in the second quarter scoring 22 points, but they allowed the Fever to score 20 points to keep them in the lead into halftime, 30-22. At the close of the third quarter, the Fever once again showed their dominance by preventing the Venom from scoring while posting up 3 touchdowns of their own. In the first seconds of the fourth quarter, there was a momentum shift for the Venom, scoring their first touchdown of the second half in 3 seconds, which was followed by a pick-6 less than 2 minutes later. The only time the Fever was able to get on the board in the fourth quarter was with 4 minutes left in the game. The Wichita Wild and the Nebraska Danger are third and fourth, respectively, in the Great Plains Division. In every quarter, the Wild outscored the Danger with the greatest amount at 25-3 in the third quarter. Both the Wild defense and offense had scoring success. The Wild defense only allowed two touchdowns and the remainder of the 22 Danger points were from the field goals. The Wichita Wild was able to defeat division rival, the Nebraska Danger, 65-22.

The Sioux Falls Storm and the Chicago Slaughter met up on Saturday evening. Going into half time, the Storm was on top with a halftime score of 41-14. The third quarter proved more promising for the Slaughter, where they were only outscored by 7 points, 21-14. The Storm found great strength in their running game and closed out the game with 2 rushing touchdowns, while the Slaughter could not find the end zone. The Storm defense was able to completely upset the Slaughter offense with a fumble recovery, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, 2 sacks, and 3 interceptions. The Sioux Falls Storm remains undefeated by defeating the Chicago Slaughter, 76-28.

The Arizona Adrenaline stopped by the West Texas Roughnecks Saturday evening looking to gain another win for the franchise. In the first half, the Blizzard pulled away quickly, not allowing the Steelhawks to score at all in the first quarter and only 3 points in the second, while they scored a total of 48 points by halftime. Coming back from halftime, both teams started out very slowly, the Steelhawks again not scoring and the Blizzard only posting up a field goal. Though the game appeared to be over, the Steelhawks found a second wind in the fourth quarter by limiting ball movement for the Blizzard with a safety and keeping their offense on the field for 22 points. The strong efforts of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks were too late for the dominant play of the Green Bay Blizzard in the first half. The Blizzard earned another win for the franchise Saturday evening, 61-25.

The final Saturday evening game was between the Richmond Revolution, the third team of the Atlantic Division, and the Reading Express, the top team of the Atlantic Division. The momentum appeared to be with the Express, earning a safety and a touchdown; however, in the final seconds of the second quarter, the Revolution was able to score their first touchdown of the game. The Revolution hoped to maintain the momentum shift at the end of the first half; however, the Express quickly took charge of the second half, preventing the Revolution from scoring any points in the second half while getting 23 additional points of their own. The Richmond Revolution were plagued with fumbles, interceptions, and missed opportunities, which allowed the Reading Express to dominate the game from the beginning to the end, beating the Richmond Revolution, 46-7.
