Week 16--af2 Players of The Week

July 15, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Tennessee Valley wide receiver/defensive back DESMOND FOSTER, Arkansas quarterback KYLE ROWLEY and Lubbock wide receiver/defensive back DARVIN PETERSON have been named the JLS Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 16 of the 2008 season. In addition to these three awards, the Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 16 goes to Tulsa wide receiver JERMAINE LANDRUM.

JLS IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Foster (5-9, 190, Alabama St.) had an impressive all-around effort for Tennessee Valley in the team's 73-21 victory at home against South Division rival Daytona Beach. The rookie WR/DB from Alabama State was a factor on both sides of the ball helping the Vipers win their ninth game and keep their 2008 playoff hopes alive. Foster rushed three times for eight yards and two touchdowns on offense. He also recorded 8.5 tackles (7 solo, 3 asst) and one interception on defense. Foster's back-to-back rushing scores helped give the Vipers an early 21-7 advantage in the first half. This is the first JLS Ironman honor of the season for Foster. He has come on strong recently, giving the Vipers another offensive scoring option. On the defensive side, Foster is tied for second in interceptions (2) and is second in total tackles (53.5).

SCHUTT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rowley (6-0, 195, Brown), in his fifth af2 season, had his best outing of the season for Arkansas in the team's big victory over division rival Tulsa. Rowley's 402 passing yards and nine touchdowns were the major reason the Twisters pulled out the victory on the road. The veteran quarterback from Brown has thrown for 300 or more yards in three games this season and is one of two QBs to break the 400 mark. With a new team record (402 passing yards in a game), Rowley has helped the league's hottest team move into the top spot in the Central Division with a seven-game winning streak (the longest in Twisters history). After starting his career with the Charleston Swamp Foxes in 2003, Rowley has played for the Columbus Wardogs, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers, the Manchester Wolves, the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings, and the Spokane Shock, where he won the 2006 ArenaCup. He also played a stint in the AFL last season. Rowley leads the league in pass efficiency with a 124.7 passer rating. He has thrown 73 touchdowns, only six interceptions, and a total of 3761 yards passing, which ranks second in the league.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Peterson (5-10, 195, Texas A&M Commerce) was a menace on defense for Lubbock in the team's 60-54 loss at home in Week 14 against the Austin Wranglers. The rookie defensive lineman, playing in his first af2 game, was a tackling fiend. Peterson registered 17.5 total tackles (16 solo, 3 asst) overall, the most ever recorded in a single af2 game. Peterson starts his af2 career by winning an award in his first week in the league; he was signed the Monday before the weekend. The previous tackles record was 16.5 by Adrian Jones of Greensboro (2003) and Jermaine Toney of Greensboro (2002). A leading tackler at Texas A&M Commerce, Peterson is expected to continue to be a strong influence on the defensive end. He even was able to knock down two passes and his secondary play improved throughout the game, as he learned the new system and style of play on the fly.

CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK

Landrum (5-8, 180, Tulsa) is the Week 16 recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that emerged in 2006 to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Landrum's catch was an incredible diving effort on a difficult throw from QB John Fitzgerald in the Talons' loss to the Arkansas Twisters 66-54 on Saturday. The third-year playmaker from Tulsa dove across the endzone to snatch the pass out of the air for a score with 1:53 to go in the first quarter. Landrum's touchdown was one of four he scored on the night on eight catches for 80 yards. One of the league's top players in Week 16, Landrum finished with eight catches and nine kick return yards. He currently is second on the Talons in receiving (70 catches for 638 yards, 12 TDs) and is the team's leading rusher (14catches for 61 yards, 5 TDs). Landrum is a three year Talons veteran receiver and was a contributor in last season's ArenaCup win.
