Week 12: Saturday Night Matchups

June 11, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

QUAD CITY STEAMWHEELERS (4-6) AT KENTUCKY HORSEMEN (5-5)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Rupp Arena (23,000) 7:00 P.M. ET

Week 12 kicks off its Saturday action with the Quad City Steamwheelers making the trip south to Kentucky to face the Horsemen in only the third meeting between the two teams. This will be their first meeting of the 2009 season. Both teams will be coming off losses last weekend, with the Steamwheelers falling to Iowa and Kentucky falling to Tennessee Valley. Quad City is on a four game losing streak and haven't won a game since May 9. They are struggling to find their game, and are having little luck finding it on the ground. On average, the Steamwheelers are only rushing 8.5 yards per game, but do have the fifth best passing offense in the league (276.1 yards per game). Quad City is led by the duo of QB J.J. RATERINK and WR JESSE SCHMIDT. Raterink is completing 64.4% of his passes for an average of 280.2 yards per game. Schmidt continues to be one of the top offensive threats in the league, making nearly 12 receptions per game for 161.7 yards. He also averages nearly 23 points per game (22.4), third most in the league. In last week's loss to Iowa, Schmidt made eight catches for 125 yards and three TDs. K MATT DENNY has been near perfect on point after touchdowns, connecting on 93.9 percent overall, second best in the league. DL ANTON CEASAR leads the club's quality group of linemen with 4.5 sacks. Quad City is currently tied at No. 14 overall in the latest league coaches poll. Kentucky enters this week's home game hoping to rebound from last Saturday's humbling 41-13 road loss at Tennessee Valley. The Horsemen came into the contest averaging a league-best 66.2 points per game. Their previous point low for the season before Saturday was 48. The Vipers forced three interceptions and three sacks. Former NFL QB JARED LORENZEN is the offensive playmaker for the Horsemen, and he is averaging almost 19 yards per game rushing and 194.9 yards passing. Against Tennessee Valley, however, Lorenzen completed 15-of-29 passes with two interceptions and only one touchdown. Backup QB JUSTIN RASCATI didn't fair much better, completing 7-of-11 passes with one touchdown and one interception. The continued favorite receiver of the two signal callers is WR LONNELL DEWALT. Dewalt is making nearly 8 catches per game for roughly 92 yards and 15.2 points. DB WILLIAM MULDER leads the club in interceptions with seven. He's tied for second in the league in that category and also ranks second overall in passes defended (23). While statistically these two teams are similar, the Horsemen look to have a slight edge at home considering their 3-1 record at Rupp Arena this season.

MAHONING VALLEY THUNDER (1-9) AT ALBANY FIREBIRDS (4-6)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Times Union Center (13,901) 7:30 P.M. ET

Saturday night continues when the Mahoning Valley Thunder visit East division rival Albany for the third and final meeting between these two teams in 2009. The Thunder have yet to tally their second win of the season while the Firebirds will be attempting to make a late push to make the postseason. A victory over Albany in Week 1 is Mahoning Valley's only victory so far this season. Last week the team lost its 17 straight game away from home and ninth straight overall after falling at Milwaukee, 58-47. On average, the Thunder is losing their games by 21.5 points. Both of their offensive and defensive totals rank near the bottom of the league. Mahoning Valley has also hurt themselves with a league-high 34 turnovers. Offensively, QBs DAVON VINSON and BLAKE POWERS have both seen action so far. Vinson, however, will likely get his second straight start this week with Powers on injured reserve. Vinson has just 17 TD passes in seven games played with eight interceptions. WR QUOREY PAYNE is the team's top offensive threat. Payne is averaging nearly seven receptions per game for 102 yards and 13.2 points. Last week in the loss to Milwaukee, Payne had five catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. He also had two 50-yard kick return touchdowns, one missed field return and one kickoff return. Payne currently ranks second in the league in all-purpose yards with 1,986 (198.6 per game). A key defender for the team has been LB MICHAEL ALSTON, who had two tackles-for-loss, one forced fumble and one sack last weekend. The Firebirds enter this week's tilt on a bit of a roll having won four of their five games. Last week they stole a road win at Manchester, 48-46. Albany's recent streak has the team ranked for the first time in the league coaches poll at No. 16 overall. The Firebirds are led by QB STEPHEN WASIL, who has been stellar under center after returning from injury earlier in the year. In the team's last five contests, Wasil has thrown 32 TD passes with just five interceptions. Last week against Manchester, he completed 22-of-44 passes for 300 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. WR/DB CHRISTIAN WISE has been leading the offensive air assault, averaging 8.56 receptions per game for 127.4 yards. WR/LB ALVIN RAY JACKSON has been strong all season as well. He earned the JLS Ironman of the Week for his overall effort against Manchester. Jackson had six catches for 71 yards while also tallying 4.5 tackles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. DL REGGIE PARAMOURE leads the club with 7.5 tackles and 5.0 sacks. If Wasil and the offense continues their recent run of success, the Thunder might be quieted for another week.

TENNESSEE VALLEY VIPERS (7-3) AT SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS (8-2)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Albany Civic Center (8,034) 7:30 P.M. ET

The action heats up with a Top-10 showdown when the No. 6 Tennessee Valley Vipers travel to face their South Division rivals, the No. 3 South Georgia Wildcats. This is the third of four head-to-head meetings among the teams. So far the teams have split the first two affairs with South Georgia winning the first round while Tennessee Valley won the most contest in Week 6. Both teams are coming off victories last weekend, including Tennessee Valley's stifling 41-13 home win against Kentucky. Much of Tennessee Valley's success can be attributed to the team's defense, which is holding the opposition to 38 points per game, second lowest in the league. They are also limiting foes to less than 230 passing yards per game. The Vipers impress offensively as well, having the highest success rate within the red zone (86%), having scored 42 touchdowns from within the five so far this year. QB KEVIN EAKIN is doing his part to lead the Vipers, averaging 239.4 yards of total offense per game while completing 64.6 percent of his passes and only being intercepted six times. Last week against Kentucky, Eakin completed 22-of-36 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns. WR MICHAEL JOHNSON is making nearly eight catches a game. He had five catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns last week. South Georgia is making a rather convincing run at this season's playoffs, and QB DARNELL KENNEDY is doing all he can to keep the momentum up. Kennedy, who has already thrown for over 50 touchdowns and 2,300 yards, is completing 61 percent of his passes and has only been intercepted four times. He is also averaging 238.5 passing yards per game. He also ranks third in rushing TDs with 15 on the season. WR ALVANCE ROBINSON is the team's top receiver with 926 yards and 21 TDs. Robinson is averaging more than 13 points per game. As an offensive unit, the Wildcats are putting the third highest amount of points on the board (60.9) while tallying 284.6 yards of total offense. As the top-two teams in their division, this game could be a pivotal battle that foreshadows who may come out on top at the end of the season.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY DORADOS (5-4) AT CORPUS CHRISTI SHARKS (2-8)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - American Bank Center (7,498) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Dorados head three hours south to Corpus Christi for the third of four head-to-head meetings among the clubs this season. Rio Grande Valley is 2-0 against the Sharks in 2009 and lead the all-time series 7-1. After a 5-1 start to the season, the Dorados have struggled of late with three straight losses. In the recent losing streak, Rio Grande Valley has allowed nearly 74 points per game (73.6). The team's most recent defeat came last week at Amarillo as the Dusters won for just the second time in 2009, 62-48. The Dorados' 48 points scored was their second lowest offensive output of the season. QB NICK HILL led the club in defeat with a season-high 416 yards passing on 28-of-41 attempts. He also had seven TD passes, four to WR ROD WINDSOR, but threw two costly interceptions. Trailing 56-48 with less than 30 seconds to play, Hill's second interception halted the Dorados' potential game-tying drive as Amarillo DB GERARD LEWIS returned the pick for a 14-yard TD to seal the Dusters win. Hill has thrown for at least 300 yards in seven of nine games and leads the af2 in passing yards per game (324.6) and total offense (335.4 yards per game). Windsor, another rookie, is on pace to shatter many if not all of the af2's receiving and scoring records in 2009. In nine games played, the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Western New Mexico alum leads the league in scoring (230 points) and receptions (119) and is second in receiving yards (1,474). He is also tied for second in total touchdowns (37) and receiving touchdowns (37). As a team, the Dorados rank sixth in scoring at 60.2 points per game. The team's defense, however, ranks 21st overall in scoring, allowing nearly 59 points per contest. Rio Grande Valley has been hurt in recent weeks by the loss of veteran LB TRAVIS MCALPINE, who leads the club with four interceptions. DB CRAIG TURNER is Rio Grande Valley's leader in tackles (53.5) and pass breakups (12). He also ranks second in the league in yards per kick return at 27.3. Despite their recent streak, the Dorados are still ranked in the Top-10 (No. 10) in the latest league coaches poll. On the other side, Corpus Christi has had its share of troubles in 2009. The Sharks haven't been able to find consistency at quarterback with GARY COOPER, so the team decided to part ways with the veteran signal caller earlier this week and will now look to rookie SEDALE Threatt to lead the club. The team will also be without two of its top defensive players as DL DARIUS ROBINSON and DB ROSHAWN MARSHALL were recently placed on team suspension. These losses will hurt the Sharks no doubt as the club already ranks near the bottom of the af2 standings in scoring defense. Corpus Christi is allowing nearly 60 points per game to opponents in 2009. Threat will have a trio of talent receivers to throw to in JONATHAN GRAHAM, BRANDON HUSSEY and ANTHONY CLARK. Clark has 10 catches in three games played, all 10 of which have been for touchdowns. Although the Sharks have some weapons on offense, they'll need a better effort on defense this week if they want to keep things close with the dangerous Dorados.

BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT BATTLEWINGS (5-5) AT AMARILLO DUSTERS (2-8)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Amarillo Civic Center (4,870) 8:00 P.M. ET

The BattleWings head to Amarillo, Texas this week to take on the Dusters Saturday night at the Amarillo Civic Center. This is the first of two head-to-head meetings among the two clubs this season. The Dusters own the all-time advantage in the series, 6-1. After a slow 1-3 start to begin the year, Bossier-Shreveport has won four of its last six contests. The BattleWings are currently ranked No. 13 in the latest league coaches poll. The club is coming off a convincing 79-29 home victory last week against Corpus Christi. Leading the way in the win was FB JASON SCHULE. Schule had 13 rushes for 112 yards with six rushing TDs against the Sharks. His rushing yards and rushing touchdowns totals both set af2 single-game records. Schule is the first player in league history to rush for at least 100 yards in an af2 game. He has now moved into second place on the af2 career rushing list with 1,148 yards and trails another former BattleWings player, SHERARD POTEETE, who has 1,346 yards. He currently leads the af2 in rushing yards in 2009 with 416 and is tied for the league lead in rushing TDs with 16. Bossier-Shreveport also boasts a talented receiving trio in veterans CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER (54-662-13 TDs), BUCHIE IBEH (38-453-21 TDs) and P.J. BERRY (49-742-13 TDs). The club ranks seventh overall in scoring, averaging 59 points per game. As strong as Schule and the offense was last week, the BattleWings defense was just as impressive, forcing six Corpus Christi turnovers. Sharks QB Gary Cooper was intercepted four times, two each by DBs Roland Cola and Phillip Geiggar. Cola leads the club in interceptions (6) and tackles (49). The Dusters enter Week 12 with a renewed energy thanks to the return of veteran QB JULIAN REESE. In his first game action in 2009, Reese led Amarillo to a 62-48 home victory last Saturday against Rio Grande Valley. The win was just the second of the season for the Dusters. Both victories have come at home. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound signal caller completed 26-of-37 passes against the Dorados for 313 yards and seven TDs with just one interception. The Indiana State alum, in his fifth af2 season overall and third campaign with the Dusters, also had one rushing TD in the victory. His top target was WR Brent Craft. Craft recorded a team-high 10 catches for 141 yards and one TD. On the defensive side, rookie DB GERARD LEWIS was a difference maker for the Dusters. Lewis notched a team-high 6.5 tackles, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and a game-high two interceptions. Midway through the fourth quarter the Dusters owned a 56-34 advantage, but saw that lead shrink to 56-48 with time winding down. With Rio Grande Valley attempting to tie the game with less than 30 seconds to play, Lewis stepped in the way for his second interception of the night. He returned the pick 14 yards for a touchdown to seal the win for Amarillo. Lewis is tied for the team lead in interceptions (3) and pass breakups (7) and ranks second on the Dusters in tackles (33). Amarillo forced a total of six stops on the potent Dorados defense. If Reese gets proper pass protection and the Dusters defense can step up once again, expect Amarillo to give the BattleWings all they can handle.

MILWAUKEE IRON (4-6) AT OKLAHOMA CITY YARD DAWGZ (5-5)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Cox Convention Center (10,595) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Iron head to Oklahoma City for the first time ever in Week 12 action that surely won't disappoint. Milwaukee is coming off of a much needed home victory, the team's first of the season. After losing four games in a row, the Iron have taken three of the last four and are looking to stay alive in the American Conference playoff race. Last week's game highlighted the offensive contributions of veteran QB TODD HAMMEL, playing his second game for the Iron after joining the club just two weeks ago. Hammel completed 25-of-39 passes for 337 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions. Milwaukee WR ANTOINE BURNS was Hammel's favorite target of the night; Burns had eight grabs for 112 yards and three TDs. WR BRIAN PRAY also contributed seven catches for 79 yards and one TD. The Iron defense forced two fumbles in the game. LB BLUE ALDRIDGE tallied a team-best 6.5 tackles. The Iron continue to lead in defense, allowing the fewest yards per game in the league (228.7). They also boast the league's best pass defense, which is led by DB LAVAR STEPTER. Stepter has 34.5 tackles and four interceptions. The Yard Dawgz are looking to stay on track in the race for the 2009 postseason. This week the club is ranked No. 12 in the latest league coaches poll. After getting off to the best start in team history (4-0), Oklahoma City lost its next five games. Last week's victory was the first in a month for them. The game saw Oklahoma City edge the Arkansas Twisters, 56-54. QB ROBERT KENT had a good performance, completing 18-of-27 passes with 289 yards and six TDs. He also had six rushes for 45 yards and a TD. The league's all-time leading scorer, WR AL HUNT, caught eight passes for 136 yards and four TDs with one rushing TD as well. The veteran Hunt has been stellar for the Dawgz with 60 catches for 896 yards and 24 TDs as well as four rushing TDs. Currently, Oklahoma City leads the league in rushing with 456 yards and 24 rushing TDs. The Yard Dawgz came up with a crucial defensive stop in last week's win when DL COLIN BRYANT forced a fumble in the end zone to stave off the powerful Arkansas offense. Oklahoma City ranks third in the af2 in total offense (322 YPG) which should make for an explosive matchup against the unforgiving Milwaukee defense.

GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (6-4) AT IOWA BARNSTORMERS (7-3)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Wells Fargo Arena (8,403) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Blizzard blow into Des Moines, Iowa this week for a battle with the Barnstormers in what will be a battle among the top two teams in the gritty Midwest Division. This is the fourth all-time matchup between the two clubs. Green Bay owns a 2-1 edge in the series. In the only head-to-head affair between the two in 2009, Iowa bested Green Bay, 46-41, in Week 7. The Blizzard offense is led by QB GINO GUIDUGLI and WR MATT FORSE. Last week, the Blizzard escaped Peoria after the Pirates missed a field goal inside the 10-yard line that would have given them the lead as time expired. Guidugli put up a solid performance, completed 19-of-30 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing two picks. Guidugli also ran for three scores as well. Forse had a game-high nine catches for 150 yards and pulled in all four of Guidugli's TD passes. Forse leads the club with 71 catches for 1,007 yards (10th in af2) and 15 TDs on the season. DB TRACY BELTON is leading the Blizzard with 54 tackles. He also has five picks and 12 pass breakups on the season. DL ANTHONY HOKE is the team's top pass rush threat with five sacks. BYRON TINKER is leading the league in forced fumbles with seven on the season. Green Bay sits a game behind Iowa in the division standings and ranks No. 9 in the latest league coaches poll. The division-leading Barnstormers, currently No. 8 overall, are coming off a 20-point road win at rival Quad-City Steamwheelers, 69-49. Iowa is well-positioned for its first ever af2 playoff appearance. The Iowa defensive backfield came up big in the game against Peoria with three interceptions and five pass break ups. DB TANNER VARNER had two picks and 7.5 tackles, a performance which won him the Aaron's Defensive Player of the Game Award. Varner is currently leading the league in tackles with 83.0 (71 solo). The Barnstormers' excellent pass defense is rounded out by their defensive line, which has the third most sacks in the league (23). CHARLES JOHNSON (7) and rookie BRENT CURVEY (6.5) are the team's top two pass rushers. Overall, the club leads the league in total turnovers with 32 and in fumble recoveries with 17. On offense, QB BRIAN VILLANUEVA enjoyed an interception-free night against the Steamwheelers, going 13-of-20 with four TDs. He also added one rushing TD. WR ERRICK McCOWN had eight catches for 146 yards and two TDs. He added a rushing TD as well. The Blizzard will have to limit their miscues to the turnover-hungry Barnstormers defense if they hope to keep things close in this pivotal divisional road game.

ARKANSAS TWISTERS (7-3) AT TULSA TALONS (9-1)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - BOK Center (6,777) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Tulsa Talons prepare at home this week to continue their eight-game winning streak as they face long-time conference rival Arkansas. As both teams hold the top position in their respective divisions, the teams enter Week 12 with their all-time series tied 9-9. The Twisters saw their three-game win streak snapped last week at home with a two-point loss to Oklahoma City, 56-54. Despite the defeat, QB KYLE ROWLEY, who ranks No. 2 individually in passing average per game, completed 20-of-30 passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Along with Rowley's top ranking, the team also ranks No. 2 in both passing offense and total offense. FB/LB CHAD COOK tested the mid-ranked Oklahoma City defense as he ran the ball seven times for 41 yards and one touchdown. The team may have missed the presence of WR ROD HARPER in the attack, however. Harper was a record scoring and receiving pace before earning an NFL contract with the New Orleans Saints. Defensively, the Twisters struggled a bit on defense against the dangerous Yard Dawgz, allowing 349 yards of total offense. DB AHMAD BROWN led the defense with 4.5 tackles. Arkansas is currently ranked seventh overall in the latest league coaches poll. The Talons, who are ranked No. 2 this week, boast the league's top-ranked scoring offense and No. 3 ranked passing offense. They have been tough to handle all season, but especially at home where they remain undefeated at 5-0. In their last game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Tulsa shut out the high-powered Pioneers in the first quarter. Tulsa started the game strong, scoring 21 points in the first quarter, seven of which were the result of a fumble recovery by LB JAMAR RANSOM. QB JUSTIN ALLGOOD, who ranks No. 4 in both pass efficiency and passing average per game, completed 19-of-35 passes and seven touchdowns without an interception. The Talons success can also be attributed to the team's defensive players. Ransom leads the team in total tackles (58) and interceptions (5). DBs DELENELL REID and PIERRE THOMAS both contributed to last week's victory with 7.0 tackles, while Reid had the game's only interception. In order to break their upcoming opponent's five-game winning streak and take the series lead to 10-9, the Twisters will need to focus on their defensive game and force some critical stops against the high-powered Talons. This week's matchup should be a high-scoring affair as both clubs average better than 60 points per game.

BOISE BURN (8-2) AT TRI-CITIES FEVER (1-9)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Toyota Center (5,700) 10:00 P.M. ET

The Boise Burn travel to Kennewick, Wash. this week to take on the Fever in a West Division affair. The Burn, who rank just behind undefeated division leader Spokane, hope to widen their 5-2 series lead as they play the Fever for the second time this season. The last match-up between the two clubs resulted with the Burn dominating the game, winning by nearly 50 points (77-28 in Week 8). In Boise's game last week, Central Valley outgained the Burn in both net passing yards (327 to 164) and total offensive yards (341 to 195). However, with the Burn ranking No. 4 in scoring defense, they were able to clinch the victory by scoring off Central Valley's game-changing mistakes, including a fumble recovery in the second quarter, an interception in the third quarter. Boise's offense came prepared to play, as FB DAMIEN WALKER ran the ball nine times for 20 yards and scored a team-record four rushing TDs. QB TAYLOR THARP also contributed to the team's 10 touchdowns, completing 17-of-20 passes with three TDs. Tharp also did not throw an interception for just the second time in 2009. He has 46 TD passes on the season against 15 interceptions. Boise also boasts the league's top kick returner in DB TERRANCE SANDERS (680 yards - 32.4 ypr). He also has a league-high six kick return TDs. He had a 56-yard kickoff return for a score last week in addition to 8.0 total tackles on defense. He leads the club with 62.5 tackles and six interceptions. Boise has won four straight games and is currently ranked fifth overall in the latest league coaches poll. On the other side, the Fever head into this week's contest looking to break their three-game losing streak. They'll need to focus on their defense and restrict their opponents from scoring big since their defensive points per game average (60.7) is almost double their offensive average (32.4). During their recent loss to Stockton, Japanese QB TOMOTSUNA INOUE completed 23-of-44 passes with four touchdowns but also tossed three interceptions. DB/WR RAY LITTLE, who ranks third defensively on the Fever (31 tackles, 1 INT, and 2 fumble recoveries), led the squad with 7.0 tackles and scored one receiving touchdown. Tri-Cities will need a better effort from Inoue and an inspired defensive push in order to stay competitive this week against the surging Burn.

FLORIDA FIRECATS (4-6) AT CENTRAL VALLEY COYOTES (3-7)

SATURDAY, June 13, 2009 - Selland Arena (5,487) 10:00 P.M. ET

The Florida Firecats travel over 2,300 miles cross country this week to Fresno, Calif. for their first-ever meeting with the Central Valley Coyotes. The Firecats, who enjoyed a bye in Week 11, won their most recent contest two weeks ago at home against Manchester, 69-53. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Florida. In the game against Manchester, the Firecats outscored the Wolves in every quarter but the fourth, giving them an early and big enough lead to remain on top for the entire game. QB CHRIS WALLACE had an outstanding game, being responsible for nine out of the 10 Firecats touchdowns. Wallace, who ranks No. 9 in passing average per game, completed 19-of-25 passes for 246 yards, only giving up one interception in the second quarter. WR MAGIC BENTON caught seven passes for 102 yards and two TDs. As for the defense, DB THOMAS ARNOLD helped to stop the Wolves in their tracks with eight solo tackles. DB JAMES MCCOY (1 interception) and DL TERRANCE CHAPMAN (1.0 sack) also stood out individually on the defensive side. Florida is tied with Quad City for the No. 14 position on the latest league coaches poll. As the Coyotes prepare to host the Firecats, they are anxious for a chance to break their four-game losing streak. Central Valley's most recent defeat came last week against Boise. Although they kept the game close in the first quarter, the Coyotes weren't able to bounce back after giving up 20 points to the Burn in the second quarter. The team relied on QB RYAN O'HARA to put points on the board. O'Hara completed 31-of-50 passes and 327 yards with seven touchdowns. All of his passing numbers aside from his one interception were season-highs for the rookie signal caller. WR/DB LAMONTE JONES, who leads the team in receiving with 101 catches for 1,113 total yards and 22 TDs, caught nine passes against Boise for 97 yards and had two touchdowns. Central Valley's defense did not perform well, however, as the Burn scored touchdowns on 10 of their 12 possessions. DB VINCENT JOSEPH, who leads the Coyotes individually with two interceptions, headed the defense with five total tackles. This contest has the makings of a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair as both clubs allow more than 55 points per game to their opponents.
