Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton which was postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information.
*Wave United's 2-1 win v. Por on 6/23 was Milwaukee's first this season when allowing the initial score. Wave United is now 1-4-0 when the opponent scores first after going 1-8-0 in similar circumstances last season.
*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United team, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.
*Wave United's 2-1 loss to Seattle on 6/13 at Pat Jones Field was Milwaukee's first loss on the PJF in five career outings. Wave United was 3-0-0 last season before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota on 5/22. In each case, the games were shifted to the PJF due to wet or unplayable conditions on the Stadium Field at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 15-6 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/25 v. Minnesota was the 26th of his A-League career, and the 10th in his two years with Wave United.
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03. Thus far in 2004, Wave United has played five overtime contests, going 2-2-1 in those outings.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 â Dec. 5, 2004.
Last Week's Recap:
Wed. 6/23 @ Milwaukee Wave United 2, Timbers 1 Attendance â 1,131
Johnny Torres' goal in the 61st minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Wave United to a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers Wednesday night (6/23) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A crowd of 1,131 saw Wave United raise its record to 2-7-1 (7 points) while the Western Conference leading Timbers fell to 8-4-0 (24 points). The Wave United victory, which ended Milwaukee's three-game losing streak, also evened the season series between the clubs at one game apiece.
Portland struck first as Byron Alvarez scored his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. Alvarez collected a deflected clearance outside the penalty area before dribbling past three defenders to score on a left-footer from the middle from the middle of the area against Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin.
Milwaukee evened the score in the 38th minute on Chad Dombrowski's header from eight yards away off a corner kick by Torres. Torres scored the game-winner on a free kick just outside the penalty area when he curled in a 22-yard shot to the top right corner of the goal past Portland âkeeper Bayard Elfvin.
Portland finished the match two men down when both Gavin Wilkinson (second yellow card) and Lee Morrison (red card for dissent) were ejected in the 81st and 82nd minutes, respectively. Milwaukee also finished a man down when Nino Marcantonio was excused in the 90th minute for drawing his second yellow card. Larkin posted the win with two saves while Elfvin, who was making his first start of the season, took the loss despite a fine performance in which he registered eight saves.

Fri. 6/25 @ Milwaukee Wave United 1, Thunder 0 (OT) Attendance â 1,370
Greg Howes scored the only goal of the contest six minutes into overtime as Wave United defeated the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder 1-0 Friday night (6/25) in front of 1,370 at Uihlein Soccer Park. Milwaukee's second straight win improved Wave United's record to 3-7-1 (10 points) while Minnesota fell to 6-3-3 (21 points).
For the third consecutive meeting, neither team was able to produce a goal in regulation time. Wave United created most of the good opportunities only to be thwarted by Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren, who made several spectacular saves to keep Milwaukee off the board. Warren's best stop came early in the second half when he denied Jamar Beasley with a kick save in the middle of the penalty area after Beasley had been sent through on a feed from Johnny Torres. Howes also came close to putting Milwaukee in front in the 76th minute when he cracked a blast from 15-yards off the right post after a sensational carry from midfield.
The winning goal was set up when Ibrahim Kante played a long pass to Torres, who took the ball down the left side of the penalty area. Torres then laid the ball off to Howes, who took several touches to top-left part of the area before unleashing a 22-yard blast that beat Warren inside the right post. It was Howes' second goal of the season, and Milwaukee's first overtime game-winner in four extra-period games this season.
Winning goalkeeper Jim Larkin had three saves while posting his third shutout of the season. Warren took the loss despite registering nine saves. Milwaukee unloaded a season-high 20 shots in the contest, out-shooting Minnesota 12-5 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime.

Sat. 6/26 @ Minnesota Wave United 2, Thunder 1 (OT) Attendance â 2,716
Rookie midfielder Nino Marcantonio scored on a bouncing shot from 14 yards out just inside the left post as overtime expired to give Wave United a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Thunder in a re-match Saturday night (6/26) at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, MN. Marcantonio's goal, the first of his professional career, enabled Milwaukee to sweep the weekend match-up between the clubs and clinch the season series in favor of the Brew City squad (2-1-1). The result also marked the first time a Milwaukee A-League club had ever beaten Minnesota in back-to-back games.
The teams battled through another scoreless first half although Minnesota has a great chance to score when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 18th minute following a foul in the box by Milwaukee's Ibrahim Kante against Amos Magee. However, Johnny Menyongar's attempt against Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin rolled just wide of the right post.
Milwaukee finally scored the first goal when Greg Howes converted on a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Howes buried his attempt against Minnesota âkeeper Joe Warren after Johnny Torres had been taken down in the penalty area trying to run on to a ball chipped in by Howes. Minnesota answered in the 54th minute when newly signed forward David Castellanos scored from 10 yards out on a rebound off the left post from an initial shot by Brian Roberts.
The game-ending sequence began with a free kick by Torres outside the penalty area. His initial serve into the box was cleared to the top of the area, where Howes was able to gather it before playing a touch to his left for Marcantonio. The rookie slotted his right-footer through a maze of defenders past a stunned Warren to give Wave United the victory.
Larkin posted his third straight win with one save while Warren, who turned in another stellar performance, had seven saves in the loss.
