Lofty Goal of World Wide Distribution of Used Cleats
June 28, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Toronto Lynx News Release
(TORONTO, ON) - The Toronto Lynx in partnership with Direct Kicks Productions will be hosting a "Cleats for Kids Night" on Wednesday, August 18th when the Lynx take on the Virginia Beach Mariners at 7:30 at Centennial Park Stadium. Soccer fans, soccer coaches and players are being invited to bring their used cleats/equipment to the game which will be distributed world wide through approved Social Agencies to needy kids.
Scott Grandville and Helen Stoumbos hatched the idea of Cleats for Kids when Team Haiti came to Canada recently without cleats. "It's pretty sad to see this!" says Grandville. "In Canada, we sometimes are blind to the hardships that other soccer players suffer. We decided then and there that there must be something that we could do to help other soccer players throughout the world."
Direct Kicks Productions in partnership with athletic associations, social agencies, and the international corporate community are establishing a distribution system for used cleats/equipment so that children can play soccer, the common denominator among all peoples of the world. As creators of the first ever youth soccer series, "Direct Kicks: Grassroots Soccer TV", Direct Kicks Productions has succeed in providing a product that highlights the tremendous growth of grassroots soccer which can be seen nationally in Canada on Rogers Sportnet (Mondays and Tuesdays-check local listings) and also on Fox Sports World (Mondays and Saturdays @ 6:00).
This worthy initiative has attracted the interest of amateur soccer clubs such as the Vaughan Azzurri Girls 88, a highly successful girl's soccer club in the Vaughan Youth Soccer Club who have committed to volunteering for the mission. The Ontario Soccer Association has agreed to become the mail drop off point for the cleats while Grandville and Stoumbos continue to meet with Canadian Soccer Association to develop a program to expand it world wide.
