Milwaukee Wave United News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) â Sparked by goals from Greg Howes and Matt Schmidt not to mention excellent team defense, Milwaukee Wave United defeated the El Paso Patriots 2-0 Friday night (7/25) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The win, Milwaukee's third straight including Wednesday's Open Cup triumph over the Milwaukee Bavarians, improved Wave United's A-League record to 9-8-0 (27 pts.) while El Paso fell to 8-11-2 as the Patriots remained with 26 points. Milwaukee now moves in front of El Paso into second place in the Central Division standings, with the fourth and final match between the clubs scheduled for this Sunday, July 27, 4:05 PM at Uihlein. Wave United stays six points behind the division leading Minnesota Thunder (11-6-0, 33 points), which beat the Portland Timbers 1-0 in Minnesota.
Howes scored his fourth goal of the season from the middle of the penalty area off a left wing cross from Troy Dusosky. Dusosky intercepted a pass at midfield then continued down the left wing until finding Howes on a run to the middle of the box. Howes' one-time half-volley beat El Paso goalkeeper Scott Alexander just underneath the crossbar.
Matt Schmidt added his first of the year in the 61st minute after a Milwaukee build up that saw five players get a touch around the perimeter of the penalty area. Dino Delevski found Schmidt on the left side and the latter blasted a deflected shot past Alexander to make it 2-0.
The Patriots, who had the benefit of a 20 MPH wind at their backs in the second half - the same which aided Milwaukee in the first half - maintained constant pressure in the attacking zone throughout the latter 45 minutes. However, a solid Wave United defense anchored by goalkeeper Jim Larkin kept El Paso off the board. Larkin improved to 7-8-0 on the season with his sixth shutout of the campaign.
Wave United raised its regular season home mark to 5-3-0 with its third straight league victory at Uihlein. El Paso dropped to 2-6-1 on the road. Milwaukee now leads the season series 2-1-0.
Wave United continues its current home stand this Sunday (7/27,4:05 PM) with the important re-match against the Patriots. Tickets for Sunday's match are available at the Uihlein Soccer Park Ticket Office, 7101 W. Good Hope Rd. on Milwaukee's northwest side.
