Wave United getting ready for Calgary this Friday

August 3, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team continues its current home stand this Friday night, August 6, 7:35 PM when it host the Calgary Mustangs. Coach Art Kramer's team, which currently sports a record of 6-3-2 home / 2-6-1 road / 8-9-3 overall (27 points) will be looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to the Portland Timbers this past Saturday (7/31) at Uihlein. Despite the setback to Portland, Milwaukee remains one of the league's hottest teams (7-2-2 in its last 11) and is just four points behind the fourth place Seattle Sounders (9-10-4, 31 points) in the race for the final playoff spot in the conference.**

**The top four teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences will qualify for the A-League playoffs beginning in September.

Friday's match with Calgary (3-4-3 home / 0-10-1 road / 3-14-4 overall (13 points)) will be the second-of-four regular season meetings between the clubs. Wave United claimed the first match between the squads with a 3-2 win over the Mustangs at Uihlein on 7/14. Despite its unimpressive mark, the first-year Mustangs come into Friday night's match-up unbeaten in their last two outings, including a 3-0 win at home over Seattle this past Sunday (8/1).

All Wave United games home and away can be heard live on 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word") with air time for each contest approximately 20 minutes prior to kick-off.

Wave / Wave United Members from U.S. Futsal Squad (Keith Tozer, Greg Howes, Todd Dusosky, and Pat White) to be Honored at Halftime of Friday's Game (8/6) at Uihlein / Tickets just $5

Wave Coach Keith Tozer along with Wave / Wave United players Greg Howes, Pat White, and Todd Dusosky will be honored for their recent contributions to the U.S. National Futsal Team's during halftime ceremonies Friday night (August 6, 7:35 PM) when Wave United hosts the Calgary Mustangs in an important A-League match at Uihlein Soccer Park, 7101 W. Good Hope Rd. on Milwaukee's northwest side.

All four were substantial contributors to the U.S. effort which produced a first-place finish in the just completed CONCACAF Futsal Championship held in Heredia, Costa Rica. Tozer, the U.S. National Futsal Team coach, directed the team to its second CONCACAF title (the U.S. also claimed the crown under Tozer in 1996) while Howes, Dusosky, and White were all instrumental in the team's success.

Howes led the U.S. team in scoring with four goals, including the game-winner in a 2-0 win over Cuba in Saturday's (7/31) championship tilt. Howes also scored twice in the U.S. triumph over Costa Rica (4-0) the previous night (7/30), which clinched a spot for the U.S. team in FIFA Futsal World Championship to be held November 21 – December 5 in Chinese Taipei. Dusosky and White each scored twice in a 6-0 win over Guyana on 7/26, while Dusosky added an assist in the tournament opening 2-2 tie with Panama. (Howes also scored one of the goals in that contest.) The 12-man U.S. team was comprised exclusively of Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) players.

All tickets for Friday's game are just $5. Call the Wave / Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for tickets or more information, or visit www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.

Wave United Notes:

*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton which was postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information.

*Wave United's club record eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) ended with a 4-0 loss at Vancouver on 7/23. That streak came on the heels of a 1-7-1 start, the slowest nine-game start in Milwaukee A-League history (1997-2004).

*The three goals scored by Wave United in a 3-2 win v. Cal on 7/14 is a season high for Milwaukee. Last season, Wave United scored three or more goals in 11 outings, going 10-1-0 in those contests.

*Wave United's 2-1 win v. Por on 6/23 was Milwaukee's first this season when allowing the initial score. Wave United is now 1-6-1 when the opponent scores first after going 1-8-0 in similar circumstances last season.

*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United team, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.

*Wave United has trailed just three times at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13, 1-0 @ Van on 7/23, and 2-0 v. Por) so far this season.

*Jim Larkin's shutout on 7/22 @ Edm was his fifth this season, the 28th of his A-League career, and the 12th in his two years with Wave United.

*Johnny Torres' goal on 7/25 @ Por was his team-leading seventh this season, and the 26th of his three-year A-League career.

*Greg Howes' goal (GWG) on 7/9 v. VB was his fourth this season, and the 44th of his five-year A-League career.

*Todd Dusosky registered Milwaukee's first multi-goal game this season when he scored two (including the GWG) on 7/14 v. Cal. Dusosky has now tallied 23 goals in his A-League career.

*Digital Takawira's goal (GWG) on 7/22 @ Edm was the 45th of his five-year A-League-career. Takawira is Milwaukee's all-time regular season A-League scoring leader with 117 points (45 goals + 27 assists).

*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*The scoreless draw on 5/22 v. Min was also the first tie in Wave United history. Milwaukee did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just three minutes of overtime during the regular season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.

*In stark contrast to last season, Wave United has now played seven overtime matches this season. Milwaukee has played 112 combined overtime minutes and is 2-2-3 in such contests.

*Defender Chad Dombrowski has exceeded the second limit on penalty points with seven yellow cards (the first limit comes after four) and will have to sit out upcoming games v. Calgary (8/6) and Vancouver (8/12). Dombrowski missed an earlier game at Edmonton (7/22) due to exceeding the first limit.

*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.

*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.

Last Week's Recap:

Portland scored twice in the first nine minutes of the contest and it was all the Timbers needed to defeat Milwaukee Wave United 2-0 in an A-League match Saturday night (7/31) in front of 1,569 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park. The result improved Portland's record to 13-7-0 (39 points), elevating the Timbers into a first place tie with idle Vancouver in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, Milwaukee dropped to 8-9-3 (27 points).

The Timbers opened the scoring when Byron Alvarez bagged his 10th of the season on a low shot from the top of the penalty area. Alvarez ran onto a touch from fellow forward Dan Antoniuk, who sent a nice back heel to Alvarez after taking a pass from Alex Bengard.

Bengard followed with his fourth goal of the campaign in the ninth minute to put the Timbers ahead 2-0. Again, it was Antoniuk redirecting a through ball to set up his teammate for a shot from the top of the box.

From that point on, goalkeeper Josh Saunders and the Portland defense held Milwaukee in check. Saunders registered both of his saves in the first half, stopping both Nick Walls and Chad Dombrowski on bids just inside the penalty area. Wave United's bid to get back in the game took a major blow when goalkeeper Jim Larkin was red-carded on hard tackle against Antoniuk in the 55th minute. Although reserve goalkeeper Jeff Richey played brilliantly in relief of Larkin, the man-down Wave United squad could not produce any goals.

Saunders finished with two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season. It was also the fifth time that Milwaukee was shut out this season. Despite the loss, Wave United is still 7-2-2 in its last 11 outings.
