USL announces week 16 honors
August 3, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release
TAMPA, FL â United Soccer Leagues announced the Week 16 Teams of the Week for A-League and Pro Soccer League, honoring Richmond's Rob Ukrop and Pittsburgh's Nathan Salsi as the Players of the Week. Long Island's Kristen Farriella and Boston' Conradi Santana were named the Super Y-League Players of the Week.
The Richmond Kickers were just a few moments away from losing 2-1 to the Puerto Rico Islanders on their home pitch when Rob Ukrop entered the match in the 89th minute. Within seconds Ukrop served in a left-footed cross that fellow forward Matthew Delicate headed in for the tying goal.
Then, in the waning seconds of stoppage time, Ukrop unleashed another left-footed blast, this time from 35 yards out and directly at the goal. The shot caromed off the crossbar and across the line for what would be the deciding score.
Ukrop, in his 11th season with the club, is the Kicker's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals and 28 assists for 166 points. He spent time in 1996 with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer, recording the team's first goal in MLS history.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 1-0 win over the Long Island Rough Riders this past weekend. Defender Nathan Salsi scored the game-winner in the 10th minute off of a cross by midfielder Steve Armas. Salsi, a first year player for the âHounds, has notched two goals and three assists on the season. This is his fifth time garnering Team of the Week Honors and his first as Player of the Week.
The W-League Long Island Lady Riders debuted 16-year old Super Y-League goalkeeper Kristen Farriella with the start in the Northeast Division Championship and led the team to a 1-0 overtime victory. The young keeper showed well with seven saves, recording just the third shutout by a goalkeeper on the season for the club, which has five team shutouts.
The U16 Boston Bulldogs grabbed a 2-1 road win Sunday despite playing a man down against the Western Mass Junior Pioneers. Conradi Santana scored both goals in the win.
