Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).
*Wave United's 2-1 loss to Seattle on 6/13 at Pat Jones Field was Milwaukee's first loss on the PJF in five career outings. Wave United was 3-0-0 last season before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota on 5/22. In each case, the games were shifted to the PJF due to wet or unplayable conditions on the Stadium Field at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*Although its record doesn't indicate it, Wave United has actually played pretty well so far this season. Of its five losses, Milwaukee has suffered two setbacks in overtime, and one other in the final minute of stoppage time. Collectively, Wave United has trailed for just 74 or the 676 minutes it has played this season.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/6 v. Syracuse was the 25th of his seven-year A-League career (91 games) and the 9th of his two-year Wave United career (25 games).
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF Qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 â Dec. 5, 2004.
Last Week's Recap:
Sun. 6/13 @ Milwaukee Sounders 2, Wave United 1 Attendance â 1,447
Welton's goal in the 54th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Seattle Sounders topped Milwaukee Wave United 2-1 in an A-League contest Sunday night (6/13) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A crowd of 1,447 witnessed the match played at Pat Jones Field as wet grounds prevented the game from being played on the Stadium Field. Milwaukee, which is now 0-2 v. Seattle this season, dropped to 1-5-1 overall (4 points) while the Sounders improved to 5-4-1 (16 points).
Seattle tallied first on an own goal by Milwaukee in the 35th minute when Wave United defender Steve Lawrence inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net attempting to block a pass by Seattle's Sean Henderson. Henderson's low cross from the right side of the penalty area was intended for teammate Chad Brown; instead it was accidentally volleyed by Lawrence past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jim Larkin from eight yards away.
Milwaukee had a chance to even the score in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick by Johnny Torres, but Torres' attempt hit the crossbar and sailed over the goal.
The Sounders made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Welton converted on a full volley from six yards out at the far post off a redirected pass from Roger Levesque. Levesque picked up the assist when Welton scored off his header from the initial pass into the penalty area by Marco Velez.
Wave United finally got on the board on a turning right footer by Greg Howes from the middle of the box in the 62nd minute. Howes connected on a bouncing one-timer to the far post following a grass-hugging entry pass from the top right side of the penalty area by Chad Dombrowski.
From that point on, Seattle goalkeeper Preston Burpo and the Seattle defense thwarted continuous Milwaukee pressure to secure the victory. Wave United nearly tied the score on several occasions, including a free kick blast by Torres in the 90th minute that clanged off the crossbar. Burpo finished the contest with 10 saves, while counterpart Larkin had three for Wave United.
