Milwaukee Wave United News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) WeltonÂ’s goal in the 54th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Seattle Sounders topped Milwaukee Wave United 2-1 in an A-League contest Sunday night (6/13) at Uihlein Soccer Park. A crowd of 1,447 witnessed the match played at Pat Jones Field as wet grounds prevented the game from being played on the Stadium Field. Milwaukee, which is now 0-2 v. Seattle this season, dropped to 1-5-1 overall (4 points) while the Sounders improved to 5-4-1 (16 points).

Seattle tallied first on an own goal by Milwaukee in the 35th minute when Wave United defender Steve Lawrence inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net attempting to block a pass by SeattleÂ’s Sean Henderson. HendersonÂ’s low cross from the right side of the penalty area was intended for teammate Chad Brown; instead it was accidentally volleyed by Lawrence past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jim Larkin from eight yards away.

Milwaukee had a chance to even the score in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick by Johnny Torres, but TorresÂ’ attempt hit the crossbar and sailed over the goal.

The Sounders made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Welton converted on a full volley from six yards out at the far post off a redirected pass from Roger Levesque. Levesque picked up the assist when Welton scored off his header from the initial pass into the penalty area by Marco Velez.

Wave United finally got on the board on a turning right footer by Greg Howes from the middle of the box in the 62nd minute. Howes connected on a bouncing one-timer to the far post following a grass-hugging entry pass from the top right side of the penalty area by Chad Dombrowski.

From that point on, Seattle goalkeeper Preston Burpo and the Seattle defense thwarted continuous Milwaukee pressure to secure the victory. Wave United nearly tied the score on several occasions, including a free kick blast by Torres in the 90th minute that clanged off the crossbar. Burpo finished the contest with 10 saves, while counterpart Larkin had three for Wave United.

Milwaukee hits the road for a pair of games this upcoming weekend at Virginia Beach (Friday, June 18, 7:05 PM CDT) and Richmond (Saturday, June 19, 6:05 PM CDT) before returning to Uihlein on Wednesday, June 23, 7:35 PM when Wave United entertains the Portland Timbers.
