In the first and only meeting of the season between the A-League's newest clubs, Milwaukee struck first on John Ball's goal in the 13th minute from six yards out. Ball knocked in the rebound of a Dino Delevski shot that was initially save by Syracuse goalkeeper Mike Gabb. Wave United continued to press to extend its advantage, but the Salty Dogs slowly began to turn the tide late in the first half. Syracus finally got on the board in the 50th minute when Mike Kirmse scored his first of the year from 10 yards out after Milwaukee failed to clear a corner kick from the middle of the box. The Salty Dogs took the lead for good on a Gabe Valencia goal in the 63rd as he converted a rebound from 12 yards out after Wave United goalkeeper had saved a long shot from Ian Woan. From that point on the Syracuse defense prevented Milwaukee from generating any serious scoring chances. The Salty Dogs eventually scored during stoppage time when Michael Rich rolled a 45-yard shot into an empty net after Wave United had moved Larkin forward in the waning moments to try to create an advantage. Syracuse moved back into first place in the Northeast Division by improving its record to 5-2-0 (15 pts.) while Wave United, fourth in the Central Divison, dropped to 2-2-0 (six pts.).
Suspensions: Wave United has no one listed on the current A-League / USSF suspension list.
Notes: *John Ball's goal on 6/1 v. Syracuse was the 22nd of his five-year A-League career (90 games).
*Matt Schmidt, Jeremy Aldrich, and Jim Larkin have played every minute (360) thus far in the regular season.
*Wave United will try to become the first Milwaukee team to ever win two straight at Minnesota. Wave United's 2-1 win at Minnesota on 5/24 broke a six-year, 14-game winless streak at the National Sports Center.
*Portland will be making its first visit ever to Uihlein Soccer Park. The Timbers were 2-0 against Milwaukee at the County Sports Complex during the 2001-02 seasons.
