Riverhawks to Assist Special Olympians

(Cincinnati, OH) – The Cincinnati Riverhawks will pass along their professional experience to athletes on the local Special Olympic soccer teams this Wednesday.

Several Riverhawks players will be training the teams at Veteran's Park on Harrison Avenue from 6:30-7:30 pm. The teams are in preparation for a Special Olympics soccer tournament being held this weekend in Troy, Ohio. Teams from all over Ohio will be competing in this tournament.

"We think this is a great opportunity for the kids," said Janet Smith, the Executive Director of the Cincinnati Special Olympics chapter. "They will be very excited to train with the professional players. It's always great when the community gets involved with the Special Olympics."

"We are very excited to be able to help out the Special Olympics," said GM Jim Peto. "Special Olympics is a great organization and it shows that anybody can play soccer. We hope that this will not be a one time event. Hopefully we can become more involved with the Special Olympics here in Cincinnati."

Special Olympics is an international organization created in the 1960's dedicated to empowering individuals with mental retardation to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Olympics offers children and adults with mental retardation year-round training and competition in 26 Olympic-type summer and winter sports.

Special Olympics currently serves 1 million persons with mental retardation in more than 200 Programs in more than 150 countries. That number is expected to double by 2005.

The Riverhawks next home game is Friday June 6 at 8:05 pm when the Calgary Storm visit Cincinnati. The Riverhawks will celebrate the end of the school year with students from around Greater Cincinnati. All students coming to the game get in for only $3.
