Milwaukee Wave United News Release

Milwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee Wave United came up big in their first overtime showing, scoring just three minutes into the extra session to give them a 1-0 victory over the El Paso Patriots at the Sun Bowl. With a game time temperature of 99 degrees, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie to end regulation before heading into sudden death overtime.

The Wave United game-winner came in the 93rd minute when John Ball sent a bouncing shot from the top of the box. The ball was slightly deflected by Patriot defender Joel Rios before it slipped past goalkeeper Scott Alexander to secure the win for the Wave United. The goal was Ball's second of the season, giving him seven points.

Wave United improves to 5-4-0 (15 pts) to remain in fourth place in the Central Division. The Patriots were looking to move into first place in the Central Division with a win, but they fell to 6-6-2 (20 pts) and remain in second place behind Minnesota.

Wave United goalkeeper Jeff Richey recorded his first start and also his first shut-out this season. The Patriots front line challenged Richey immediately when in the eighth minute Laurenco Andrade blasted a shot from the top of the box, but Richey was able to wrap it up for the save. Late in the half, Andrade took another shot that luckily rolled just wide, as Richey had slipped in the box trying to get to the post for the save.

Both teams had a few good looks in the first 90 minutes, but neither was able to connect as the defenses held strong to end regulation at a 0-0 standstill. Wave United's best look came in the 15th minute, when John Ball delivered the ball to Matt Schmidt who volleyed in, but was unable to get a good leg under the ball and Patriot goalkeeper Scott Alexander was able to come up with the save.

This was the first of two double weekends for the Patriots and Wave United, with each team securing one victory. The Patriots will travel to Milwaukee for the second set when the two teams will battle it out on July 25 and 27 at Uihlein Soccer Park.

Wave United's next home will be Sunday, June 29, at 4:00 pm when it takes on the Indiana Blast at Uihlein Soccer Park. Call the Wave/Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for tickets or information, or check out www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.
