June 20, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release

Milwaukee, WI – It was extremely hot and windy, but the El Paso Patriots were able to hang on to secure the 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Wave United, playing the first of two games between the teams this weekend at the Sun Bowl. The Patriots played two men down for the last eight minutes of the game due to two red card ejections, but Milwaukee struggled on the offensive end for most of the match and could not capitalize on the opportunity.

The majority of the first half was controlled by El Paso, with Milwaukee unable to muster much offensive activity until late in the half. El Paso got on the board first, when the Patriots leading scorer Laurenco Andrade converted on a diving header. Taking the cross from Junro Narita, Andrade tallied his fourth goal of the season, giving him 10 points.

In the 35th minute, Wave United Head Coach Art Kramer made an early substitution, inserting Greg Howes for Anthony Maher at forward. The switch paid off, as Howes made an immediate impact, tying the game in the 43rd minute at 1-1, when he took a cross from John Ball. It was Howes' second goal on the year and Ball's third assist.

The Patriots put themselves back on top early in the second half when Michael Griego scored from 16 yards out in the 48th minute. It was an aggressive match from the get-go, with eight yellow cards issued, two resulting in ejections for El Paso's Pablo Cabrera and David De La Torre. The Patriot defense and goalkeeper Scott Alexander (5 saves) were able to hold off the Wave United to record the victory.

It was the first road loss of the season for Milwaukee, as they fall to 4-4-0 (12 pts.). El Paso improves to 6-5-2 (20 pts) and remains in second place behind the Minnesota Thunder in the Central Division. The two teams will meet again this Sunday, June 22, in El Paso, with kick-off at 7:00 pm CST.

Wave United's next home will be Sunday, June 29, at 4:00 pm when it takes on the Indiana Blast at Uihlein Soccer Park. Call the Wave/Wave United Office at 414-22-WAVE (9283) for tickets or information, or check out www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.
