Wave United Fall 1-0 in Minnesota

July 2, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release

Milwaukee, WI – Wave United entered tonight's match (7/2) looking to sweep Minnesota on the Thunder's home field, but was unable to muster much offense, falling 1-0 to the Thunder at National Sports Center. The win helps cushion Minnesota's lead in the Central Division, giving them 27 points, seven ahead of the second place El Paso Patriots.

In the 67th minute, Johnny Torres gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead when he took a through pass from Johnny Menyongar. Menyongar had dribbled past the line of defense and Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin could do nothing to stop the shot that came from Torres. The goal was Torres' fifth of the season and moved him into first place on the Thunder scoring list with 13 points.

The two teams battled back and forth, but ended the first half with a deadlocked score of 0-0. Both teams had a few good looks, but neither was able to convert the chances into points on the board. Milwaukee's best opportunity came in the opening minutes when Greg Howes got the ball to midfielder Matt Schmidt who volleyed in and took a shot that went just wide right.

Torres, who plays for the Milwaukee Wave indoor team, tried to burn Larkin and put the Thunder on the board late in the first half with his left footer from the top of the box. But Larkin was able get a hand on the ball for the deflection.

The Thunder gave the Wave United goalkeeper a workout, with five shots in the first half and ten in the second, to Milwaukee's four in the first and zero in the second. Larkin recorded five saves, but was unable to earn his second consecutive shut out. Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren marked two saves on the night and his fifth shut out. With the win, Minnesota improves to 9-4-0 (27 points), while Milwaukee falls to 6-5-0 (18 points). Wave United was hoping to win their third straight for the first time this season, after winning two in-a-row twice this year. This was the second of nine consecutive home games for the Minnesota Thunder, who next travel to Milwaukee to take on the Wave United July 31st at 7:30 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. The final two games of the six game series between the cross border rivals will take place in Milwaukee.

Wave United's next home will be Saturday, July 2, at 7:30 pm when it takes on the Pacific Division leading Seattle Sounders at Uihlein Soccer Park. Call the Wave/Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for tickets or more information, or check out www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.
