Wave United Acquires Outdoor Rights to Matt Schmidt

(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team announced today that it has acquired the rights of midfielder / defender Matt Schmidt for the upcoming 2003 season. Schmidt, who has spent the past two indoor seasons with the Wave on loan from the Minnesota Thunder, will be starting his third outdoor campaign after two seasons with the Thunder.
The 23 year-old Schmidt, who starred at Milwaukee Marquette High School and Yale University will become the third year round indoor / outdoor player for the Wave organization. The 6-0, 175 lb. Cedarburg native joins Greg Howes and Jeremy Aldrich as Milwaukee players who are currently under contract for both teams. Like Howes and Aldrich, Schmidt has plenty of A-League experience on his resume. He appeared in 35 games for the Thunder during the past two seasons (2151 minutes) registering four goals and two assists. Most of Schmidt's production came in the latter part of the 2002 campaign when he assumed a more significant attacking role in Minnesota.
On the indoor side, Schmidt has become one of the best defenders in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). In two seasons with the Wave, he has become an indispensable part of a defensive rotation that includes All-Stars Troy Dusosky, Lovelace Ackah, and Pat White. Already one of the MISL's best man markers, Schmidt increased his offensive production more than six-fold this past season in helping the Wave to its fourth straight championship series.
"Matt's progression as a professional player over the past few seasons has been phenomenal," said Wave United Coach Art Kramer. "We believe that Matt has the ability to develop into one of the top players in the country."
Wave United opens its first A-League season on Friday, May 16, 7:05 PM when it hosts the Minnesota Thunder at Uihlein Soccer Park. Art Kramer's team will also host the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition match on Sunday, May 18, 4:05 PM at Uihlein.
