Wave Hold Off Blast Behind Howes' Six Points

Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Feb. 15, 2008) -- MISL scoring leader Greg Howes had a 3-point goal and three assists as the Milwaukee Wave defeated the Baltimore Blast 16-12 on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Wave (15-7) maintained their hold on first place in the first of a four-game homestand. Chicago (13-7) played late Friday at California.
Marcelo Fontana contributed a pair of goals, including an insurance score with 4:56 remaining, and Giuliano Oliviero also scored two.
"Those were two prideful teams, two teams who respect each other, and two teams who played hard to the end," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer. "That was a playoff game."
The Wave led from early on in the second quarter, when Deco stroked a 3-pointer on a restart for a 3-2 advantage. But Milwaukee also could never pull away, never leading by more than four.
It was 14-10 early in the fourth quarter, when Marcio Leite scored a power-play goal to extend the Wave advantage. But Marcelo Fontana was called for a foul in the box just as the shot was taken; it was his fourth foul of the half so instead of a 16-10 lead, the Wave lost their man advantage.
Once Baltimore's penalty expired, the Wave had to stop the Blast for nearly a minute on their power play. They succeeded, and ended the game 2-for-3 in penalty killing against the league's best power-play team.
Nick Vorberg made a series of big saves in goal, thwarting a pair of breakaway efforts and drawing Tozer's praise.
Howes pushed his point total to 85, highlighted by a 3-point screamer from the yellow line late in the second quarter. That restart goal gave the Wave an 8-4 lead.
The Wave are off for two weeks, returning to action at 2 p.m. March 2 against the California Cougars. It's Belly Buster Day with 102.9 The Hog, and the first 3,500 fans will receive a water bottle courtesy of We Energies. Call (414) 224-9283 for tickets or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.
