Wave get past Rampage

Rockford Rampage News Release

MILWAUKEE - Marcelo Fontana's scintillating fourth-quarter 3-pointer provided the winning points Saturday as the Milwaukee Wave edged the Rockford Rampage 5-4 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Fontana won the ball in his own end of the field, dodged a tackle and then fended off a defender on his shoulder as he took the ball to the far boards and unleashed a laser to the opposite corner with 12:36 left in regulation.

Milwaukee (8-6) then survived a couple of close calls in the final 2 minutes to squeeze within a half-game of first-place La RaZa de Monterrey (8-5) in the MISL standings. Rockford (6-7) lost for the first time in four contests with Milwaukee; the teams have two games still remaining.

"I thought both keepers played great, (Rockford's Ante) Cop made some spectacular saves, and I thought it would take a world-class goal to win the game," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer. "I thought Fontana's goal was a tremendous goal."

Fontana also assisted on the Wave's first goal, a restart effort by Troy Dusosky in the first quarter. Other than that, the Wave dominated action but could not solve a determined Rampage defense. Cop saved 13 of 15 shots and the Rampage range up 22 shot blocks in front of him.

Rockford entered the game last in the league in scoring at 9.8 per game, and mustered only two 2-pointers, both by Semir Mesanovic. They came just before and after the first-quarter break, and the second gave Rockford a 4-2 lead until Fontana's run.

Wave keeper Nick Vorberg was forced to make only four saves on six shots, and Fontana registered two of the team's eight blocks in front of him.

Milwaukee played without three key offensive stars - Marco Terminesi (illness), Brett Wiesner (hamstring) and Hewerton (hamstring). Veteran defender Jonathan Santos also sat out with a knee injury. They have accounted for 66 points this year, with Terminesi still atop the MISL with 35.

"This team has a lot of guys who have played only 20-something games, and to be where we are, kudos to the team," Tozer said.

The Wave's next game is at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 against the Philadelphia KiXX. It's the World's Longest Pinewood Derby, and fans can run a car down the track beginning at 10 a.m. For more information, call 414-224-9283 or visit milwaukeewave.com.
