Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (Jan. 10, 2009) - Detroit might have been fashionably late to tonight's game, but it didn't keep the Ignition from working overtime. Josh Rife's restart goal just 1:29 into the extra period gave the Ignition a 14-12 victory over the Milwaukee Wave here Saturday.

Marco Terminesi tallied a hat trick for the Wave (3-1), who sent the game to overtime on J.P. Rodrigues' shorthanded goal with 4:47 remaining.

Weather delays prevented Detroit (2-2) from arriving at the U.S. Cellular Arena until about 30 minutes before the scheduled kickoff. The game was set back about 30 minutes, then kept up a frenetic pace for much of the night.

Neither team managed more than a two-point lead at any time. Terminesi's first two scores put the Wave up 4-2, and the score seesawed back and forth throughout. Milwaukee outshot Detroit 36-24, but the Ignition finished more chances and were especially strong on special teams. Drew Crawford and Rife each cashed in on restart chances, and the Ignition also were 2 for 3 on the power play.

One of those scores, by Ryan Mack, put Detroit up 12-10 with 6:03 remaining. When Lovelace Ackah was sent to the box for boarding 50 seconds later, Detroit appeared primed to put the game away.

But Marcelo Fontana hustled to chase down a clearance in the right corner and zipped a cross into the penalty area, where Rodrigues finished with one touch to knot the score. It was his third goal of the season.

In the extra period, a foul just to the left of Wave keeper Marcel Feenstra set up the restart, and after a time out, Kyt Selaidopoulos slid a ball across the area to Rife, who ran on it unmarked and finished. The XSL Defensive Player of the Month, Rife also had four blocks Saturday.

Wave keeper Marcel Feenstra lost for the first time in nine career starts.

The Wave travel to New Jersey for a 3 p.m. CST kickoff on Sunday. The next home game is 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, also against New Jersey. Family 4-Packs are just $44, and all Wave Summer Camp participants are eligible for a free ticket. Call the Wave office at 414-224-9283 for more information.
