BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The competition has gone from Frontier League batters to Double-A hitters, but Tanner Watson is still putting up similar numbers in the box score.

The former Rockford RiverHawks ace made his first start for the Chicago Cubs' Class AA affiliate on Monday and was nearly untouched. Watson scattered two hits, struck out two and didn't walk a hitter over six shutout innings.

The only thing Watson lacked was run support. The veteran right-hander settled for a no-decision as his Tennessee Smokies lost, 2-1, to the Birmingham Barons, a Chicago White Sox affiliate.

Through two appearances, Watson has no record and a 1.08 earned-run average.

Watson, the RiverHawks' all-time wins leader, was a member of Baseball America magazine's first-team All-Independent Leagues All-Star team last year.

Opening Night is at 7:05 p.m. May 21, when the RiverHawks host River City. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet.
