Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NY The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs were looking for momentum going into the PGCBL Playoffs on Sunday night
The Watertown Rapids had other plans, and though it took a while, they managed to stop Mohawk Valley's momentum just a little bit.
The Rapids came back from five runs down, scoring another five in the fourteenth inning to come all the way back from 5-0 to win on Sunday, 10-5.
Austin Pollack (Harrison, NY/Hofstra), who led off the game with his 39th straight game on base, scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Ryan Hernandez (Boston, MA/San Jacinto CC). Joey Castellanos (Nutley, NJ/UMass Lowell) would come home a little while later on a passed ball by Watertown starter Garrett Crowley (/Fordham). Tyler Bruno (/) brought home a third run on an RBI groundout that scored Hernandez.
Mohawk Valley added another two runs in the second inning. The first would be on a sacrifice fly by Castellanos that scored Joe Tevlin (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Niagara). They added another on an RBI single by Stephen Furman (Brookhaven, PA/Iona) that scored Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT/Mount St. Mary's).
Nolan Wilson (Atlanta, GA/Virginia Tech) got one run back in the top of the fifth on a passed ball by Mohawk Valley starter Tyler Schoff (Lee Center, NY/Bryant). Bailey Lewis (Matthews, NC/Catholic University) would walk in Trevor Kuncl (Cincinnati, OH/George Washington) with the bases loaded in the sixth to cut the lead to three. Luckily, reliever Eddie Rives (Hialeah, FL/Barry) would leave the bases loaded, mitigating the damage to just one run by getting three straight strikeouts to end the inning for the Rapids.
Andrew Bacon (Cincinnati, OH/Northern Kentucky) cut the lead to two in the seventh with a bloop single to center field that scored Nolan Wilson. A 2-RBI single by Nick Bosma (Overland Park, KS/Rhodes) scored Josh Bozoian (Chino Hills, CA/Union) and Kuncl. More than that, however, the Rapids ended the seventh with the score tied at five.
It would stay that way until the top of the 14th, when Wilson belted a no-doubt solo home run to left-center field. Samuel Neal (Smithfield, VA/Case Western Reserve) would also come home on an RBI double by Kuncl. Bailey Lewis would imitate the feat, bringing home Kuncl and William Huertin (Covington, LA/Rhodes). An error brought home a fifth run in the14th, in the form of Bosma, who brought home Lewis. That would be all Bosma would need, setting the Diamond Dawgs down in order to end the game.
Bosma picked up the win for Watertown (24-21). Hardy was saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley (26-18).
Mohawk Valley has one more game on their 2018 regular season schedule, and that will be on the road. Tuesday night, they will visit Boonville to take on the Adirondack Trail Blazers. The Diamond Dawgs will kick off the 2018 playoffs against either Watertown or Utica at Veteran's Memorial Park on Wednesday.
Watertown has two more games in their regular season, both within the friendly confines of the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. On Monday, they'll try to avenge Saturday night's loss to the Adirondack Trail Blazers that knocked them out of Central Division title contenton. On Tuesday, the Rapids will wind down their regular season with a home date against the Saugerties Stallions.
