Waterloo Black Hawks Win USHL Anderson Cup

Chicago, IL - One night after clinching at least a share of the USHL's best regular season record, the Waterloo Black Hawks earned it outright following a 3-2 shootout victory against the rival Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the season finale to capture the Anderson Cup title.

The Black Hawks finished the 2013-14 regular season with a 44-11-5 record (93 points), the most wins and points in team history. The winner of the USHL's Anderson Cup has won at least 42 games and accumulated at least 90 points in each of the last five seasons. Waterloo won each of their last five regular season games to finish two points ahead of the Indiana Ice to earn the title. By capturing the Anderson Cup, they also secure the top overall seed and home-ice advantage throughout the Clark Cup Playoffs.

It was a record-setting season for the Black Hawks which included a 16-game winning streak from December 13th, 2013 to February 7th, 2014, equaling the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) record established by the Sioux Falls Stampede who won 16 straight during the 2005-06 season. Waterloo accumulated nearly half of their points (44) in the standings during a 23-game stretch in which they were unbeaten in regulation (21-0-2), setting a new USHL record in the process for consecutive games without losing in regulation.

They also shattered their team record for fewest regulation losses (11), bettering the mark of 15 that has stood for 20 years (1993-94). The Hawks earned a League high 23 wins on home ice, equaling the second most in team history, and set a new record with 21 road victories, tied for the most in the USHL this season.

Waterloo was among League leaders in several categories, including scoring the second most goals during the regular season (239) and giving up the third fewest (153). The 86-goal differential was the second best mark in the USHL. They had six players among the top 25 scorers in the League, including forward Peter Krieger who finished fifth with 67 points (26g, 41a) and the USHL's top scoring defenseman, Brandon Montour, who was ninth overall with 62 points (14g, 48a). In addition, Cal Petersen tied for the lead among USHL goaltenders with 27 wins.

The season was also highlighted by a big milestone for head coach P.K. O'Handley who became the USHL's all-time coaching wins leader when he collected his 530th victory on January 18th. He finishes the regular season with 547 all-time coaching victories in the League.

It is the second Anderson Cup title for the Waterloo Black Hawks after they earned the trophy during the 2006-07 season when they finished the season with a League best 39-17-4 record (82 points).
