Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Hawks advanced past the Lincoln Stars, winning three of four contests during the Western Conference finals during a six-day span. During the set, Tyler Zepeda and Mitch Witek led the team with identical two goal-four assist-six point scoring lines. Goaltender Stephon Williams posted one shutout and stopped 93.8% of the shots he faced. The Black Hawks and Stars had never previously met for a playoff series.
Ten (or More) for Ten
The Black Hawks have played ten postseason games in 2012. So far, five different Waterloo players have ten or more points. Jamie Hill, Tyler Zepeda, and Mitch Witek each share the team co-lead with eleven points. Taylor Cammarata and Aaron Pearce have also reached double didgits. Ryan Papa and Mike Huntebrinker are each close to the threshold at eight. The last team to have five players with ten or more playoff points was the 2010 Clark Cup-winning Green Bay Gambler squad
Listed Among the Leaders
It's already a historic playoff run for several Black Hawks. Stephon Willaims' eight postseason wins tie him for second among Waterloo goalies in one playoff year and rank third among career leaders. Seven goals by Taylor Cammarata tie as the sixth-most in one campaign and ninth all-time for the Hawks. Nine assists for Mitch Witek are third among franchise defensemen in one postseason and tie for ninth overall.
Quick on the Draw
Waterloo has scored first in eight of ten playoff games, more than any other team during the postseason. Aaron Pearce leads the way with three opening goals. During the first five minutes of games, the Hawks have outscored opponents 4-1. That statistic is a carryover from the 2011-2012 regular season, when Waterloo had a 15-9 edge during that span.
Goalie Games
Goaltending is important in the playoffs, and two of the top three goalies during this postseason are still playing. Stephon Williams ranks second with a 2.21 goals-against average, while Green Bay's Ryan McKay is just a fraction behind at 2.26. Williams and McKay are also second and third respectively in save percentage (92.5% and 91.6%) behind the Fargo Force's Zane Gothberg. The anticipated starters for the championship series are also first and second in playoff wins and minutes played.
