Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

Excitement and high-scoring were the theme last weekend. After falling 4-3 in a nail-biter while visiting the Youngstown Phantoms Thursday, the Hawks bounced back from their long bus trip to outgun the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 6-5 in a shootout on the road Saturday. Scott MacDonald recorded a hat trick, plus an assist in the victory. Then Sunday, the Des Moines Buccaneers could not keep pace with the Hawks at Young Arena in a 7-3 decision. A.J. Michaelson scored twice and Taylor Cammarata had three assists.

Cammarata by Comparison

Taylor Cammarata ranks eighth in USHL scoring with 39 points. The 16-year-old's accomplishments are even more impressive when compared with the 2010-2011 Hawks' stats. Last year's team was led by Tyler Zepeda, with 31 points over the entire 60 game campaign. Cammarata has passed last season's team leading goal total (15, by both Zepeda and Gunnar Hughes) and is within one assist of the 22 recorded by Jacob MacDonald. The last junior hockey rookie to make such an impact for the Hawks was Lee Moffie with 44 points in 2008-2009.

Eager for Iowa Opponents

Victories versus Cedar Rapids and Des Moines last weekend improved the Waterloo Black Hawks' already solid record against teams from the state of Iowa. Waterloo is now 5-1-0 versus the RoughRiders and 2-0-0 against the Buccaneers. The Hawks also have a winning record matched up with the Sioux City Musketeers (2-0-0) and are .500 with the Dubuque Fighting Saints (2-2-0) for a total mark of 11-3-0.

Lysenko Debuts

Sixteen-year-old defenseman Vladislav Lysenko made his USHL debut for the Hawks Sunday, accumulating four penalty minutes with a +1 rating and one shot on goal. Lysenko participated with the Russian Under-17 team and won a gold medal at the World Under-17 Challenge in Canada last month. During that event, he appeared in six games with an assist and a +2 rating. Russia topped the U.S. 7-4 in the gold medal game.

Scoring in Sioux Falls

The Black Hawks' 3-2 shootout loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede on October 8th interrupted a high-scoring trend in games at Sioux Falls Arena. Each of the Hawks' previous seven trips to that rink dating back to February 2008 had included at least seven combined goals between the clubs. The high point was an 8-7 Hawks shootout victory against the Stampede on December 16, 2009.
