Black Hawks Add New Goaltender
February 1, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks and Sioux Falls Stampede have completed a trade involving goaltenders Stephon Williams and Jay Williams (no relation), the teams announced Wednesday.
The Hawks acquire Stephon Williams, who is 6-9-2 this season with a 2.70 goals-against average and a 91.3% save percentage (tied for fourth in the USHL). The Minnesota State-Mankato recruit was 20-7-6 last season for the Stampede. He also helped Sioux Falls to the USHL Western Conference finals in the postseason, winning four of five playoff appearances with a paltry 2.21 GAA and a sparkling 92.4% save percentage. Stephon Williams appeared in the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game last month in Muskegon and was slotted 22nd among draft-eligible North American goaltenders on the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings.
"We're very excited to welcome Stephon to Waterloo," said Black Hawks head coach and general manager P.K. O'Handley. "He has had success in the USHL. This trade is about putting both goalies and both teams in a position to be successful in the second half of this season."
Jay Williams is also in his second USHL season. He won 18 regular season games as a Waterloo Black Hawk, appearing in 20 contests both in 2010-2011 and in 2011-2012. Jay Williams is committed to Miami Univeristy.
Other recent former Black Hawks who first played for the Stampede include forwards Patrick Divjak and Anthony Day and defenseman Blake Thompson. The Hawks meet the Stampede at Sioux Falls Arena Friday evening at 7:05. The weekend concludes Saturday when Waterloo returns home to host the Lincoln Stars at 7:05. Good seats for that matchup still remain and can be ordered by calling the Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
