Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Success With the "C"
It has been eight games since Craig Smith was named the Black Hawk captain. Smith has a nine-game point streak and would match the league's longest run this season if he picks up a goal or assist on Friday against Indiana. During the streak, Smith has racked up 19 points. Last season, Brett Olson had a point in his first nine games as the Black Hawks captain, from November 16th through December 8th.
Looking for Divisional Milestone
With games against Indiana and Cedar Rapids this weekend, the Waterloo Black Hawks will try for their tenth win against Eastern Division rivals. The only team with ten wins in Eastern Division play so far is the Green Bay Gamblers at 11-4-1. Excluding Des Moines and the Cedar Rapids vs. Indiana series, every team in the East has beaten every other team at least once. Cedar Rapids and Indiana have only played once so far, a 4-2 Rough Rider win on opening night.
Defense to Offense
The five Black Hawk defensemen who played in all three games since Christmas each recorded a point last week. Chris Student tallied a goal and an assist versus Chicago on New Year's Eve, while Dan Sova had two assists against Tri City Friday. With big production from Black Hawk forwards, defensemen have taken a smaller scoring role. Through 27 Black Hawks games last season, Blake Kessel led the defense with 24 points. At the equivalent moment in this higher-scoring season, Patrick Wey tops Black Hawk blue-liners with 15.
Narrow Margins
The Black Hawks have won with lots of goals several times this season, but all three games between Waterloo and Cedar Rapids have been settled by one goal. Dating back to last year, five consecutive regular season meetings have been one-goal games. Since the start of 2006-2007, 14 of 19 games between the archrivals have been decided by one or two goals.
