Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

January 24, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Home to Finish January

In December, the Black Hawks were 4-5-0. January will be an above-.500 month, regardless of what happens this weekend. Waterloo is 6-1-0 during January, already surpassing the team's win total during the same month from each of the past three years and equaling the mark of the 2018/19 squad. The last time the Hawks had more January wins was in 2014 (nine). Waterloo hosts the Lincoln Stars on Friday at 7:05 p.m.; the Hawks are 2-0-0 versus Lincoln this season. They have the same 2022/23 record against the Sioux City Musketeers, who come to Young Arena at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

Baker Cooking Since Christmas

Owen Baker is in the midst of his most productive stretch as a junior player. During the 10 games after the USHL's holiday break, the 18-year-old has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) and has only been held without a point in one game. Half of his 24 points this season have been recorded in the last four weeks. Baker has already surpassed his point total from last season (22 points on 10 goals and 12 assists in 62 games).

Capable Assist(ants)

Friday's game between Waterloo and Lincoln will put two of the USHL's assist leaders on opposite sides of the red line. Lincoln's Mason Marcellus is tied for top league honors with 27 successful setups so far this year. That includes an assist in each game against the Hawks when Lincoln visited Young Arena November 18th and 19th. Waterloo defenseman Ben Robertson is only four shy of Marcellus and tied for third in the USHL. The second-year Hawk has had multiple assists in six different games.

Seven-Game Shooting Percentage

During Waterloo's seven-game winning streak from December 31st through January 20th, the Hawks scored 39 goals on 290 shots. The resulting .134 shooting percentage is well above the team's season-long mark of .105. Prior to the winning streak, the figure was just .095. Among players with 16 or more shots on goal - the USHL's threshold for leaders in this statistical category - Myles Hilman paces the team at .163. Caden Brown has 15 shots on goal since joining the team and has scored on five of them.

Recent Games

During a trip east, the Black Hawks split two close games last weekend. Friday, Waterloo overcame a 4-1 second intermission deficit to nip the Chicago Steel 5-4. The last three goals came in the final two minutes, including Myles Hilman's game-winner with under 13 seconds to play. A dozen different Hawks had at least one point. In Dubuque the next night, Miko Matikka and Owen Baker scored, but Dubuque broke a 2-2 tie in the waning seconds to edge the Hawks 3-2.
