Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Going Again with the Saints & Stampede
The Waterloo Black Hawks' schedule circles back to the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Sioux Falls Stampede this weekend. The Hawks faced both opponents on the final two days of February, falling to Sioux Falls 1-0 on the 27th before topping Dubuque 5-3 on the road the next night. Entering Friday's contest with the Fighting Saints, the teams have split four meetings, with Dubuque holding just a 16-15 edge in cumulative goals. Sunday's duel with the Stampede is the last head-to-head matchup this season, with Waterloo seeking to even the series at three victories apiece.
Hat in Hand
Nick Swaney recorded the fourth hat trick by a Waterloo Black Hawk this season on Saturday during a 5-1 win against the U.S. National Team Development Program. Coupled with another goal during the road trip on Friday, the Lakeville, Minnesota, native now has four goals in just four appearances for Waterloo this season. He also scored once in four appearances last year. Swaney joins Brock Boeser (twice, October 31st and February 14th) and Tyler Sheehy (November 6th) among Black Hawks who have had a three-goal performance this season. All of Waterloo's hat tricks have been on the road.
Don't Get Mad, Get Even
The Black Hawks have recorded 154 goals this season, just shy of the 156 that have been allowed. That almost-negligible -2 differential contrasts starkly with Waterloo's season-low -32 scoring mark through games of January 16th. Since that 7-3 loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede, the Hawks have outscored their opponents by a cumulative total of 60-30. The last time Waterloo had a positive aggregate scoring differential was prior to an 8-4 road loss to the Sioux City Musketeers on Veteran's Day.
Morris Among the Leaders
Hawks goaltender Cale Morris has now climbed among the United States Hockey League's top five goaltenders in several notable categories. Including his time with the Chicago Steel earlier this year, Morris' 92% save percentage ties for third, his 2.47 goals-against average stands fifth, and his 19 wins tie for fifth. He has won 11 of 17 starts since joining the Hawks, posting a 1.63 GAA and stopping 96.4% of shots faced.
Weekly Recap
Niko Hildenbrand had two assists and Cale Morris made 36 saves Friday, but the Black Hawks fell to the National Team Development Program Under-18's, 4-2. The next night, Nick Swaney had four points in a 5-1 Waterloo win against the Under-17 portion of the program. Phil Beaulieu also recorded three assists as the Black Hawks claimed their 20th win of the season.
