Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Going the Other Direction

After three consecutive games in the Eastern Time Zone, the Waterloo Black Hawks conclude their five-game road trip this weekend when they go west to visit the Omaha Lancers and Des Moines Buccaneers. Waterloo edged Omaha 2-0 at Young Arena on October 13th. The Friday contest with the Lancers will be the Hawks' first visit to Ralston Arena and just Omaha's third game in their new home. Waterloo has not yet met Des Moines this season. The Lancers and Buccaneers played each other twice last weekend, with Omaha claiming 3-1 and 1-0 wins on the road and at home respectively.

Best Start

With a 9-1-0 record, the Black Hawks are celebrating the best junior-era start to a season in franchise history. Waterloo currently leads the Western Conference and is tied with the Dubuque Fighting Saints for the best point total in the league through the end of October. On three previous occasions, the Hawks have won seven of their first ten games (1984/85, 1999/00, and 2000/01). Of those seasons, 1999/00 was highlighted by the best point total, 16, as Waterloo claimed two bonus points from overtime losses.

Cammarata Captures a Half Dozen

Taylor Cammarata's six point performance on Sunday was both a personal record during his Black Hawk career and the top individual offensive effort in the USHL this season. Cammarata's stat line is the best in the league since Waterloo's John Siemer had seven points versus the Chicago Steel on March 23, 2011. Sunday's game vaulted Cammarata into a share of the league scoring lead with teammate Justin Kloos at 17 points.

Power Play Boost

The Black Hawks scored three power play goals in eight chances against the Youngstown Phantoms Sunday. Waterloo continues to lead the USHL in that area of special teams, converting 26.1% of their chances. The weekend almost yielded twice as many power play goals. Friday, Ian McCoshen scored one second after an advantage had ended. Sunday, Mark Friedman recorded a goal two seconds after a Youngstown player climbed out of the box, then Vince Hinsotroza notched another just seven seconds after a Phantom penalty ended.

Weekend Recap

Waterloo won three road games in three days. The trip began with the third shutout of the year as the Hawks blanked the Muskegon Lumberjacks 3-0 Friday. Saturday, Waterloo rallied from a 2-1 third period deficit to edge the National Team Development Program U-17's 3-2. The trip concluded Sunday afternoon with three goals apiece in the first and third periods in an 8-3 decision versus the Youngstown Phantoms. Of the 18 non-goaltenders who appeared for the Hawks, 13 had at least one goal or assist.
