Boston Breakers News Release
After defeating the Washington Freedom 2-1 in the season opener the Breakers return to the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD this Saturday and look to earn their second win over the Freedom and their second win of the season. This match will be broadcast regionally in both the Boston and Washington markets on Comcast SportsNet.
The fourth place Breakers (1-1-2) look to bounce back from their first loss in 2010 last Saturday against the Chicago Red Stars at Harvard Stadium.
Boston will need to get on the scoring sheet this weekend to move up in the standings. Lauren Cheney and Kelly Smith lead the Breakers in scoring in Boston's previous match up with Washington on April 10, but since then the Breakers have struggled to come out on top, drawing twice and then breaking their undefeated streak with a 2-0 loss to the Red Stars last weekend.
After going winless the last three matches, Boston will arrive in Maryland with intensity, however, Washington will look to continue to ride a wave of confidence following an impressive 3-1 win over Saint Louis last weekend.
Washington is currently sitting one-point and a seed above Boston in the standings in a tie for third. A Breakers victory on Saturday could move them up as high as second place, depending on the results of the weekend's other three games.
Saturday's game will be broadcasted on Comcast SportsNet at 7:00 p.m. Fans can also follow the action via the WPS Match Tracker.
Angela Hucles Becomes Second Member of the Pillars of Excellence
The Boston Breakers honored former Breaker and U.S. Women's National Team midfielder Angela Hucles at last Saturday's home game by inducting her into the Pillars of Excellence. Hucles retired in October 2009 and is the second inductee into the Pillars, alongside Maren Meinert, who was selected in 2009.
A Hucles banner will now hang every game next to the existing Meinert banner. Hucles, joined by family, friends, team owners and executives, a member of the Riptide, and local youth players enjoyed a tribute video featuring the likes of Tony DiCicco, Kristine Lilly, Kate Markgraf, and Pia Sundhage.
Despite the special evening, the Breakers could not fend off a hungry Chicago Red Stars team, as they fell 2-0 and broke their undefeated start to the season. The Breakers are now tied for fourth place in WPS after four matches.
