Yakima Bears News Release
The MLB First-Year Player's Draft continued Tuesday and the Arizona Diamondbacks selected 29 players in addition to the three selected on the opening day of the draft.
In the 16th round Arizona took Michael Blake out of the University of Hawaii, who is a Vancouver, Washington native and had previously attended Mt. Hood College before transferring. The lefty saw most of his action as a first baseman and designated hitter for the Rainbow, but it appears the D-backs drafted Blake as a pitcher after he posted a 3.24 ERA in ten appearances this spring.
After using its top two picks on the opening day of the draft to take right-handed pitchers, the Diamondbacks took plenty of lefty pitchers on day two, including three with size in 6'4" Jonny Pedrotty (13th round) of Holy Cross, 6'9" Adam Choplick (17th round) out of Billy Ryan high school in Texas and 6'5" Taylor Siemens (18th round) of California Baptist.
The D-backs also picked up a few PAC-10 players by taking Oregon second baseman Danny Pulfer (19th round) and Oregon State third baseman Carter Bell (29th round), after earlier adding the other half of the UCLA battery in catcher Steven Rodriguez (15th round) to join the organization's top overall pick Trevor Bauer.
Many of the players drafted will be reporting to Yakima June 15 for a summer with the Bears. The club looks to have its roster set by June 14.
A list of the Diamondbacks players drafted so far can be found on the next page.
The draft will conclude with the final 20 rounds Wednesday starting at 12:00 EST.
The Yakima Bears begin the season June 17 in Vancouver and will play at home for the first time on June 22. Season tickets and mini plans are on sale now at the downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
