BOYDS, MD (July 30, 2010)...Washington Freedom is inviting local youth ages 8 to 18 to register and participate in next week's Get Active! 3-on-3 Soccer Tournament, which will kickoff at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 4 at the Maryland SoccerPlex, and culminate just before Washington Freedom players take to the field for their 7:30 p.m. home match against the Philadelphia Independence.

Get Active! tournaments were launched by the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) and Grassroot Soccer (GRS) to fight childhood obesity across the country, and through participation, youth will learn the benefits and importance of staying active. Registration for next week's tournament, which is available online now, is $40 and includes participation in the tournament, a t-shirt and gift bag, and a ticket to the game following the tournament, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Grassroot Soccer. In addition, a Freedom player will also speak to tournament participants, give soccer tips, and discuss the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle.

The tournament, sponsored by Rustic Oven, will be held before the Washington Freedom vs. Philadelphia Independence game, presented by Citi. Citi has created Citi Soccer Kids program, an initiative to highlight WPS players and coaches as mentors and role models for youth, dedicated to inspiring young students to be active in their community and realize that anything is possible through determination and perseverance.

"Washington Freedom is excited to host the Get Active! 3-on-3 Soccer Tournament, and to watch our next generation of soccer stars come out and compete, before we all turn our attention and watch the best women in soccer today battle Wednesday evening," said George Perry, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Washington Freedom. "We all know the importance of keeping kids active, and are thrilled to be a part of this league initiative."

As part of their efforts, Citi will welcome 60 kids from the DC Scores organization to participate in the 3-on-3 tournament, and then be escorted into the Maryland SoccerPlex to watch Freedom's match. During halftime, 25 kids from DC Scores will read a poem to all those in attendance which will be shown on the stadium Video Board. DC Scores youth will also receive a special treat, as after the game they will have a chance to hear from U.S. National and Freedom star defender Cat Whitehill and Freedom Head Coach Jim Gabarra, who will both address the benefits of staying fit.
