Columbus Wardogs News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Wardogs arenafootball2 team will honor area soldiers this season by wearing the insignia of the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Benning on their jerseys. Most of the soldiers from the 3rd Brigade are currently fighting on the front lines in the war in Iraq. The blue and white insignia will be sewn on the Wardogs uniforms above the players' hearts.
All af2 teams are honoring the country's soldiers by displaying the American flag on the back of all helmets. The Wardogs are going a step further by specifically recognizing the soldiers from Fort Benning's 3rd Brigade by wearing the insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division.
The Wardogs and Fort Benning have formed a close relationship over the last two seasons. Over 2,000 soldiers attended Wardogs games last year.
"We had the pleasure of entertaining many of those soldiers that are now converging on Baghdad," said Wardogs president/general manager Mike Sammond. "Those men and women supported the Wardogs, and now it's our turn to show our support for them."
"As a kid who grew up in the Army, this is extra special to me," said Wardogs fullback/linebacker Demarco Johnson, who was born and raised at Fort Benning. "I'm proud that our entire team is going to recognize the soldiers' commitment and dedication."
The insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division features a blue square with three white stripes. Each white stripe represents the three major operations in which the division participated in World War I. The blue field symbolizes the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in battle.
