Warburg qualifies for Wimbledon

The Times of London printed a fond story of Sam Warburg, who just qualified to get into the main draw of Wimbledon. As reporter Alyson Rudd writes:

"Sam Warburg has had a Wimbledon poster on his wall since he was 9 years old. This is important information. The British, after years of being let down by home-grown talent, have learnt to love foreigners who come to Wimbledon and shine but it helps if those overseas players demonstrate that the championships have a special place in their heart."

In the third qualifying round of Wimbledon, Warburg outplayed Kevin Kim 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, 6-1. Kim had beaten Warburg at Yuba City three weeks prior. Warburg admitted the grass-court surface better suited his game. After his victory, Warburg sprinted off court to phone his parents.

Rudd continues with her article: "Right now (my parents) are freaking out, it's 7 in the morning and they've been up since 3 o'clock, jumping up and down screaming," he said. "My mum's probably telling my dad, 'don't move, he's winning so don't move right now.' " They are, Warburg agrees, a superstitious family. His father will have been rubbing away at a flat piece of rock from "somewhere in Britain. It's like a wishing stone. He always has it in his pocket when I'm playing."

The Wimbledon crowds should take to Warburg: he has a rather romantic aspiration. "I would love to play Roger Federer, opening match, Centre Court," he said. "I'd like to bow to the Queen, kneel to her, whatever you do. I'd love to wave at her."
