May 13, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - Darrick Wallace can add the achievement of the Vidswap.com Southern Indoor Football League Player of the Week to his trophy case along with setting a record number of votes with 561 in the poll. The fans from Central Texas turned out in high volumes as he collected 59% of the vote to only 37% for Kemmie Lewis of the Acadiana Mudbugs.
Last week, Wallace had a 12-yard touchdown pass reception from Deron Ellis late in the game to halt the Swashbucklers 20-game winning streak and dreams of a comeback.
He is a leader in the SIFL as he is number two in the league with an average of 103.0 all-purpose yards per game. He has scored 24 points and holds the SIFL records with the longest missed field goal return and also longest kickoff return.
Wallace's veteran experience and leadership skills have served as a great asset to the Turfcats inaugural team. Wallace has extensive experience playing arena and indoor football and he has used that that knowledge and his natural speed to help lead the Turfcats as a receiver and kick returner.
For the past six seasons he has played in arena leagues including the Arena Football League 2 and the National Indoor Football League. Within those leagues he has played for several teams including the Katy Copperheads and the Shreveport Battlewings. Wallace played for Head Coach Chris Duliban during the 2008 season while playing with the CenTex Barracudas. During that season, Wallace averaged 20 yards on returns, 11 yards receiving, and scored five touchdowns.
Wallace played football for four years for Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana, where he also ran track. His football coach at Grambling State was Doug Williams, a legend in the NFL. During Wallace's tenure at Grambling State, the team had a record of 27 wins with nine losses and won two consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles.
Wallace is confident about the prospects for the Turfcats inaugural season and assures the fans that "every game gets us one step closer to the championship."
