Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- The Miracle committed a season-high seven errors at Hammond Stadium as the Tampa Yankees took full advantage, winning 8-3 over Carlos Gutierrez.
Yankees starter D.J. Mitchell (1-1) gave up three hits in his six innings, with two runs (one earned), two walks, and eight strikeouts. Tim Norton allowed one run in two innings before Jonathan Hovis pitched a hitless ninth with a strikeout.
The Miracle dug themselves into an early first-inning hole after Gutierrez (2-2) walked the leadoff man. The pitcher then committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners at first and second. Gutierrez released a wild pitch and catcher Jair Fernandez threw wide of third base, letting Austin Krum go from second all the way home to score the first run.
In that same inning the right-hander walked the bases loaded and then issued another walk to Mitch Hilligoss to score the second run. Tampa would score in each of the first four innings as Fort Myers committed seven total errors, with four by third baseman Nick Romero, two by Gutierrez, and one from Fernandez.
Montero launched two monster home runs to straight-away left and to left-center. The first was a two-run blast off Gutierrez in the fourth inning, while the latter was a solo shot off Henry Arias in the sixth.
Loek van Mil made his Miracle debut out of the pen. He gave up three hits in two innings but pitched out of trouble to keep the Yankees scoreless. Van Mil, returning from a torn ligament in 2008, also struck out one and walked none.
Santos Arias worked a scoreless ninth. Gutierrez suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run. His final line was 3.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, and 3 SO.
Ben Revere was 2-for-3 for the Miracle with two runs scored. As for Tampa, Montero (3-for-4, three runs, two homers, four RBI), Brandon Laird (2-for-4, run scored), and Matt Cusick (2-for-3, double, RBI) had multihit games.
The Miracle and Yankees complete the series on Friday at 10:35 a.m. at Hammond Stadium. Ryan Zink (2-3, 4.93) will face Deolis Guerra (3-4, 5.05).
