Chicago Rush News Release
July 24, 2002 â The Chicago Rush announced today that it has signed defensive specialist Cedric Walker and lineman John Moyer to one-year contract extensions that will keep the players in Rush uniforms through the 2003 season.
"I am excited that Cedric and John have decided to stay in Chicago," said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. "It is a really positive move by our organization to solidify two important positions for next year. It shows that the Rush continues to be committed to putting the best team on the field year in and year out."
Walker, the leader of the Rush defense, is enjoying one of the best seasons of his seven-year career. He finished the regular season as the AFL's leading tackler, posting a career-high 98 tackles, three interceptions, two fumbles forced and two fumbles recovered. His 413.5 career tackles rank him fifth in AFL history.
"I want to thank the Rush organization for allowing me the opportunity to stay," said Walker. "My wife and family love it in Chicago and that played a big role in my deciding to re-sign. The organization really treats us like family here and I appreciate that."
Moyer, a four-year veteran acquired from Florida in the 2001 dispersal draft, was perhaps Chicago's most consistent lineman during the 2002 season. He led all Rush linemen by equaling his career-highs with 21 tackles and four sacks. He also recorded seven passes broken up, four forced fumbles and a safety, while helping to anchor an offensive line that only allowed three sacks all season.
"It's great to know I will be back," said Moyer. "It is the ideal situation for me â I am close to my family and I get to continue to play for the best organization in the AFL."
"We're committed to winning," said Rush senior vice president and general manager Mike Polisky. "We did the same thing last season with Dameon Porter and he has gone on to have another outstanding year. We expect the same from Cedric and John next season."
Both men would have been free agents at the end of the 2002 season.
The 2002 Central Division champion Chicago Rush finished the season with a 9-5 record and a bye in the first-round of the AFL playoffs. The Rush will host an AFL quarterfinal playoff game Monday, August 5, at Allstate Arena. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
