Six NL Players Sold in Five Days

DURHAM, N.C. – Six Northern League player contracts have been sold to Major League organizations since July 19 after the St. Louis Cardinals purchased two players today.

The Cardinals purchased right-handed pitcher Julio Villalon from Duluth-Superior and outfielder Juan LeBron from Adirondack.

Villalon, a 24-year-old Cuban who arrived in the U.S. by way of Costa Rica, was 7-3 with a 3.26 earned run average with the Dukes this year. He had thrown 77 1-3 innings, allowing 69 hits and 17 walks while striking out 74. He will report to Single-A Potomac (Va.).

LeBron, a 25-year-old from Arroyo, Puerto Rico, was hitting .353 in 102 at bats at the time of his purchase. He had seven doubles, five homers, 20 RBIs and two stolen bases. He has been assigned to Double-A New Haven (Conn.).

Albany-Colonie left-handed pitcher Aric Leclair (Kansas City, July 23), Sioux City left-handed pitchers Roger Luque (Seattle, July 22) and David Glick (New York Yankees, July 21), and Joliet catcher Ryan Sienko (Chicago White Sox, July 19) were all moved to major league organizations in the last five days.

Nine Northern Leaguers have been sold since the start of the season on May 23 and 30 have been sold since the end of the 2001 campaign.
