San Antonio Missions News Release
Nick Schulz's bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth lifted San Antonio to a 4-3 win over Northwest Arkansas in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Wolff Stadium.
After their Independence Day series opener was rained out, the Missions turned to right-hander Jesse Scholtens to deliver them a big outing Thursday. The Fairfield, CA native, making his third start since rejoining the club from Triple-A El Paso, breezed through his first three frames without allowing a hit.
His offense would help the cause early with a two-run first against fellow righty Arnaldo Hernandez. Ty France drove in the game's first run with a single to right that scored Fernando Tatis Jr. It was the 53rd run driven in for France. San Antonio added a second run when Austin Allen hit into a productive double play.
Two innings later, Allen once again produced a run on a double play groundout, pushing the lead to 3-0 on Hernandez.
For a while, the support was plenty for Scholtens, who kept the Naturals off the board until the sixth when Khalil Lee drove in Nick Dini with a single to right center.
Scholtens appeared on the verge of a complete game in the seventh, retiring both Erick Mejia and Elier Hernandez on flyouts to center. However, Anderson Miller kept the game alive with a double to left. That brought up Alex Liddi, who stunned the Wolff crowd with a game-tying homer to right center. After Kort Peterson followed with a triple to right center, Scholtens was lifted for Andres Munoz. The 19-year-old hurler calmly got the Missions out of the inning by inducing a Kelvin Gutierrez groundout to third.
San Antonio failed to score in the bottom half, sending the first game of the double dip into extras. Munoz (1-0) would work around a walk in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for the Missions' offense to end the game.
That they did in the bottom of the inning against reliever Andres Machado. With France starting the inning on second, Northwest Arkansas elected to intentionally walk Allen. Taylor Kohlwey loaded the bases when he followed with a bunt single of the mound. After Machado (0-3) got Webster Rivas to fly out to shallow right for the first out of the inning, Schulz ended the contest with a gritty walk.
T.J. Weir (1-0, 3.60) will get the ball for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio (7-6, 49-34) in the nightcap, while Northwest Arkansas (2-9, 37-44) counters with fellow righty Pedro Fernandez (3-2, 3.98).
