
Wakefield Named Top Rookie

(Westport, CT. â April 23, 2003) The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Baltimore Blast Forward P. J. Wakefield is selected as the 2002-03 MISL Rookie of the Year. Wakefield was an overwhelming choice of the voters from the media covering the MISL teams, MISL team management and coaches.
Wakefield, a graduate of University of Maryland Baltimore Campus, was the Baltimore Blast first round draft selection (14th overall) in the 2002 MISL Amateur Draft. Wakefield played in every game in his collegiate career at UMBC.
As a youth player, Wakefield played for the Soccer Club of Baltimore winning six Maryland State Championships and one Region One Championship.
This 2002-03 MISL regular season Wakefield scored 62 points (2-3PG's, 23-2PG's, 10-As.) including three game- winning goals and registered 24 blocks. P. J. finished third in points on the Blast squad behind Denison Cabral and Tarik Walker. In the MISL Championship Playoffs, Wakefield scored 11 points (5-PG's, 1 As) in five games as the Blast defeated the Milwaukee Wave for the 2002-03 MISL Championship. Wakefield's assist on Tarik Walker's goal in Game Two of the MISL Championship Series helped seal the win for Baltimore at the 1st Mariner Arena; Wakefield also scored a two-point goal in that game. Wakefield follows teammate Billy Nelson who was the 2001-02 MISL Rookie of the Year.
