Wachusett Dirt Dawgs Name Mascot

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Wednesday, May 9, 2012) - The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs have officially announced that Digger will be the name of their mascot.

After the two month long vote with almost 100 fans participating, we are excited to announce that Digger will be the name of the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs mascot, said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations, we are looking forward to sharing Digger with the Wachusett community.

The names Digger and Dusty were close throughout the entire voting process. Each name was the favorite at some point over the past two months. Digger beat out Dusty by two votes on the final days of voting. The Dirt Dawgs are looking forward to announcing Digger to the crowd at Opening Day on June 8th at 6:35 p.m.

Names such as Duke, Dinger, and Diesel were additional popular choices, and many fans took the time to offer other ideas. These write-ins included Doyle, Dingo, Dawson, and Spike. There were many creative names such as Devil Dawg, Trot the Dirt Dawg, Big Dawg, and Hot Diggity.

"It was great to get fans interacted in our selection of the name and to see all of their creative responses," said Lettre.

John Morrison, Team Owner commented, "The mascot definitely has the look of a Digger, we appreciate all the great input. I was also surprised the name Dizzy received no votes, either a tip of the cap to our energetic mascot design, or the lack of old-school NL fans in our market (no surprise there)."

The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs play at historic, and newly renovated, Doyle Field in Leominster, MA and are a 2012 expansion franchise in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. The team will play a 55 game schedule this summer in the nine team league. The Home Opener is scheduled for June 8th at 6:35 p.m. against the Torrington Titans.
