Voyagers' Rally Cut Short

OREM Utah--The Voyagers came up just short trying to stage another ninth inning rally, as they fall in the second game of the series, 8-7.
The inning began with a Joe De Pinto walk after falling behind 0-2. He stole second and then moved to third on a Pangilinan ground out. Afterwards, Aaron Tullo hit three straight batters, scoring De Pinto. Down 8-5, Jimmy Jacquot greeted new pitcher, Taylor Kinzer by lining a single to score two, cutting the deficit to 8-7, with runners and second and third and one out. Kinzer rebounded, however, getting Kyle Eveland to foul out to shallow left, a ball not deep enough for Ryan Newman to send David Herbek from third. After a pitching change to the lefty, Eddie Sipple (S, 1) forced Keenyn Walker to bat right-handed, but the leadoff batter's struggles on the evening continued, as he struck out for the fourth straight time to end the game.
Frazier Hall led the Owlz in the victory, as the league's leader in batting average collected three hits, including an RBI triple in the fifth.
The Owlz, who possess the league's second-highest batting average, seem to have a different leader each game as Hall led a balanced attack in the series-securing win. As a team, Orem collected 14 hits.
The hit parade began in the bottom of the first inning. After the Voyagers got on the board with a run in the top half, the Owlz scored two on an Abel Baker two-run double, which succeeded the first of Hall's three hits. The Owlz would not trail again.
The Voyagers were not without their opportunities, however. After Jimmy Jacquot's second home run in as many games, and his fourth of the season, tied the game in the second, the Voyagers had the bases loaded with one in the third against struggling starting pitcher, Logan Odom. Odom buckled down with his back against the wall, though, getting a foul out and a ground out to get out unscathed.
Immediately after, the Owlz reclaimed the lead on Hall's RBI single which scored Jerod Yakubik immediately after he collected the first of his two doubles in the game.
Down by a run heading into the top of the fourth, the Voyagers were able to tie the game on a Qualon Millender single, but after Odom was removed for Erik Gregerson, the Voyagers loaded the bases, only the leave all runners stranded again, unable to manage anything beyond the tying run.
Hall was in the middle of it again in the fifth with his RBI triple, and then, with the infield in, he scored when Leighton Pangilinan's throw home was wide and got by Jacquot.
Gregerson (2-0) picks up the win, going 2.2 innings, giving up just one run and striking out five. The righty got out of the bases loaded jam in the fourth to preserve a tie game.
Sam Phippen (0-4) suffered the loss, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings on ten hits. The fifth inning plagued the 6'9" righty again, as he gave up a double and then two batters later, a go-ahead triple.
De Pinto, in five plate appearances, walked three times and was hit twice, extending his on-base streak to a league-high 18 games, among active marks.
Cody Winiarski pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Voyagers, as he has now thrown 7.1 innings this season without surrendering a run.
In his Voyagers debut, Kevan Smith went 0-for-4, but was hit by a pitch in the ninth, a part of the comeback attempt.
Rain forced a delay of just more than half an hour from the scheduled 7:05 start time.
The series against the Orem Owlz concludes tomorrow. A pair of lefties are taking the hill. For the Voyagers, Scott Snodgress (0-0) will make his fourth start of the season against Nick Maronde (0-0). First pitch at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame at 6:40 p.m. on 560 KMON.
