Nashville Kats News Release
The Nashville Kats' home opener at the Gaylord Entertainment Center proved impressive with a record high sellout of 16, 517 in attendance. However, the visiting New Orleans VooDoo surged past the Kats to a 59-34 win.
VooDoo receiver Thabiti Davis caught three of Andy Kelly's six TD passes on the night. Kelly finished the game 29-for-33 for 277 yards and no interceptions.
The VooDoo put the first seven points on the board, when FB/LB Jason Bratton ran the ball in on a three-yard rush just three plays into the game. VooDoo kicker Brian Schmitz put three more on the board with a 26-yard field goal to cap the first quarter. Minutes into the second quarter the VooDoo's Davis scored on a 13-yard pass from Kelly putting New Orleans up 17-0.
Less than a minute later the Kats answered with a one yard touchdown run from FB/LB Dan Alexander. The VooDoo answered when Davis scored again, adding another six with the conversion from kicker Brian Schmitz good. The Kats' Fred Coleman returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown, the first of his career, to put the Kats in contention 24-14.
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, the VooDoo's Jacques Rumph scored on a 12-yard pass from Kelly, followed shortly by another Fred Coleman touchdown, this time on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Leon Murray ending the half with the VooDoo leading 31-21.
