New Orleans VooDoo News Release
Free Agent WR/LB Thabiti Davis one of the Arena Football League's most coveted free agents this off-season signed a contract to join the New Orleans VooDoo from the Detroit Fury, it was announced by the team today. The team also upgraded the depth of their line and defensive backfield by adding free agent OL/DL Jason Gamble and DS Richard Newsome.
"Thabiti was one of the players that we have targeted since the start of free agency," said VooDoo head coach Mike Neu. "He is one of the top receivers in the Arena Football League and uses his size to his advantage. He has made an enormous impact since entering the league as a rookie in 2003. Thabiti will be an outstanding target for our quarterback, Andy Kelly. He and Andy already have outstanding chemistry from their time together in Detroit."
Davis (6-2, 205, Wake Forest) comes to the VooDoo after playing for the Detroit Fury in 2004. Acquired by the Fury from the Orlando Predators in training camp, Davis had 127 receptions for 1557 yards with 26 touchdowns, while recording eight tackles on defense. Davis finished the season ranked third in the AFL in receptions and fifth in receiving yardage.
Prior to joining the Fury, Davis was named to the AFL's 2003 all-rookie team in his first season in the indoor game with the Orlando Predators, as he recorded 63 receptions for 759 yards with 13 touchdowns and 22.5 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one tackle for a loss.
Prior to signing with the VooDoo, Davis participated in training camp with the New Orleans Saints this past summer. Davis is a two-year NFL veteran who played for the New York Giants from 2000-01. Davis was a member of the Giants' Super Bowl team in 2000.
Gamble (6-3, 285, Clemson) is a two-year Arena Football League veteran who comes to New Orleans from the Grand Rapids Rampage. During his career, Gamble has recorded 10.5 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack, one pass defense and one forced fumble. Gamble has also attended training camps with the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys and played on the offensive line for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe in 2000. Gamble was a two-year starter at center for Clemson from 1997-98.
Newsome (5-11, 205, Michigan State) will compete for a roster spot at defensive specialist after spending the 2001 season with the New Orleans Saints. After being signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2001 NFL Draft and making the team's 53-man roster, Newsome appeared in 11 games, primarily on special teams, where he recorded 14 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery, along with one assisted tackle on defense.
