Virginia Beach Scores Decisive 3-0 Win Over Richmond

April 9, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach, Virginia -The fast-moving cold front, 30 degree temperature drop and ensuing driving rain that greeted the players and fans Saturday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex didn't cool off the Virginia Beach Mariners when they faced the Richmond Kickers Saturday night.

Virginia Beach took the lead in the sixth minute, doubled it in the 40th minute and tripled it in the 76th, all off the foot of midfielder Tim O'Neill. His two goals and assist helped beat the Kickers in the first leg of the home and home series for the James River Cup.

An O'Neill header opened the scoring for the Mariners. Defender Kupono Low's corner kick set up the goal that O'Neill sent into the lower right corner of the net, beating Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascale.

The Mariners second strike was a classic goal also involving a corner kick. This time O'Neill struck the ball perfectly curving the ball into the box where defender Chris Schwarze tucked it neatly into the lower right corner. The Mariners outshot the Kickers 12-1 in the first half.

O'Neill's second goal came off an assist from Steve Shak. Shak fed the ball to O'Neill on the left side where the midfielder neatly faked to his right and chipped the ball over Pascale's reach.

The second leg of the Cup will be played in Richmond on April 15 at the University of Richmond Stadium at 7 p.m. The Mariners will take back the cup for the first time in 10 years if they win, tie or hold Richmond to less than three goals.

The Mariners will host Village United from Jamaica in an international friendly on Wednesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. as the team continues to prepare the regular season opener on April 22 against Toronto at 7:30pm. Visit www.marinerssoccer.com or call 757-430-9800 for tickets and more information.
