April 12, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach, Virginia - The Virginia Beach Mariners continued to warm up for their upcoming April 22nd season opener Wednesday night, overwhelming Village United of the Jamaican Premier League 3-1 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The international friendly was the ninth preseason match for the Mariners; their regular United Soccer Leagues Division I schedule opens in 10 days against Toronto at 7:30 p.m.

Mariner veteran forward Jakob Fenger opened the scoring for Virginia Beach in the 39th minute when he took defender Steve Shak's pinpoint cross from the right side and cracked a header into the upper left corner of the net. The bullet shot left Village United goalkeeper Elvis Hart flatfooted.

Twelve minutes into the second half, forward Andrew Herman gathered in a deflection off of teammate Tim O'Neill and raced up the right side. Cutting in towards the box, Hart tried to cut off the far post but Herman beat him inside the near post which put the Mariners up 2-0.

Village United got on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute on a Mariner own goal when defender Shane McFaul tried to head off a shot that slid backwards over Mariner keeper Chase Harrison.

Virginia Beach closed out the scoring and the match off the foot of former Mariner Gary Brooks who was in the match for a tryout for the 2006 season. Forward Nate Micklos sent the ball to Brooks who was racing up the right sideline. Brooks headed for the center of the box and blasted a shot to the upper center of the net.

Now with a preseason record of 9-0-1, the Mariners will travel to Richmond on Saturday for the second leg of the James River Cup. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The Mariners defeated Richmond 3-0 on April 8. If the Mariners win, draw or hold Richmond to less than 3 goals, the Mariners will win back the cup for the first time in 10 years.

Virginia Beach will open their 2006 regular season schedule on April 22 at 7:30 p.m. against Toronto. General admission is $8.00. Season ticket holders, children 10 years and younger are admitted free. Visit www.marinerssoccer.com or call 757-430-9800 for tickets or more information.
