Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release
Huntsville, AL â Former Tennessee All-American and All-SEC kicker Alex Walls has signed a contract to play for the Tennessee Valley Vipers during the 2004 arenafootball2 season.
Walls, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, lettered for the Volunteers from 1999-2002 and his 292 career points placed him fourth on the school's all-time scoring list.
Tennessee Valley coach Kevin Guy said the addition of Walls should ensure the Vipers' kicking game remains among the best in af2 given the loss of Mark Lewis, who is now playing for the Detroit Fury in the Arena Football League.
"We had an important hole to fill when Mark Lewis moved up,'' Guy said. "Alex was a super collegiate player who definitely has the experience and background that we're looking for. He's a guy that has the potential to kick in the NFL one day."
Walls, of Bristol, Va., made 53 of 68 field goal attempts â including a pair of 51-yarders - and 133 of 137 extra points while at Tennessee.
In 2000 he was the Vols' leading scorer with 93 points, connecting on 18 of 20 field goals and 39 extra points without a miss. He was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award given to the nation's top kicker, voted first-team All-Southeastern Conference by The Sporting News and College Sports Central and second team All-American by Football News, collegefootballnews.com and The Sporting News.
Walls made 15 of 20 field goals in 2001 and 12 of 17 during his senior year.
Walls was one of three kickers invited to the 2002 NFL combine and attended training camp with the Colts.
Wilson re-signs: Offensive/defensive lineman Ron Wilson, a former Alabama A&M standout, recently agreed to return to the Vipers for a second season.
As a rookie in 2003, the 6-2, 290-pound Wilson played in 16 games and had nine tackles and six quarterback hurries.
Guys and Gals Golf Tournament
The first Kevin's Guys and Gals Charity Golf Tournament will take place March 13 at the Becky Pierce/Huntsville Municipal Golf Course in Huntsville. The four-man scramble event will begin at 9 a.m. and all proceeds will benefit underprivileged children in the local community.
The cost is $60 for an individual player and $220 per team. Hole sponsorships are available for $150 and it's $320 for a combined team/hole sponsor.
